Would Overwatch work in the style of a JRPG? A fan puts it to the test and shows: It would definitely be funny!
Whenever developers create a new game, it doesn’t take long for the fan community to think, “Cool game! But what if the game was not in genre X but in genre Y?” This quickly leads to funny videos where familiar heroes are viewed through a slightly different approach to their adventures.
The YouTuber The Salt Factory took Overwatch and wondered how it would play as a classic RPG. He used the fundamental design of the JRPG classic Final Fantasy IX, adopting its music and menus, and then enriched them with the character images of the Overwatch heroes.
Even in the menus and the item descriptions, many details can be found that hint at the history of the characters. However, the “main element” of the game is the genre-typical “random battle” against Roadhog. Of course, with the legendary ATB system (Active Time Battle), where you had to “wait” until a bar was filled so that a character could act.
The various abilities of the heroes were perfectly adopted in “Final Fantasy” style, with the original Ultimates being equated to the “Limit Break” or “Fury” attacks.
Cortyn says: When I see such videos, I always hope that the “classic” JRPGs with their outdated battle systems will get a revival – even in universes that actually don’t fit – like Overwatch. It’s a shame that Blizzard is not known for RPGs in this style and basically only produces multiplayer titles – but one can still dream.
Have you seen the audacious Overwatch clone “Hero Mission”? The gameplay is truly “fantastic”!
