3v3 is currently the most popular group size in Overwatch’s Arcade mode. Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan discusses experiments with different team sizes.
In the official Blizzard forum, the discussion arose about what it would be like to experiment even more with team sizes. Players love the 3v3 Arcade mode, and since it made its way into the game, it has been actively played for casual, quick fun. Fans talked about the perfect team combos and speculated that champions who are not often seen on the battlefield might be chosen more frequently.
But most agreed that the 8v8 group setup would look something like this:
- 4 Tanks – Reinhardt, D.VA., Zarya, Roadhog
- 3 Support – Ana, Lucio, Zenyatta
- 1 Damage Dealer – Soldier: 76

Blizzard’s Jeff Kaplan also spoke up and participated in the discussion.
“We experimented for a while with 8v8. The matches felt way too chaotic for our taste. The game lacked a clear front, and we often died to seemingly random encounters while we were outnumbered.
We also tried 4v4, but that felt like there was almost no room for mistakes. One single death had an extreme impact on the match. Ultimately, we settled on 6v6, based on the size of our maps, movement speeds, and engagement distances.
As you can see, we are open to experimenting with different group sizes in the Arcade mode. 3v3 is currently the most popular in Arcade. – Jeff Kaplan, Blizzard.”

This could mean that Blizzard will give us even more room for group experiments in the Arcade mode in the future. Fans will probably make it their own thing anyway.
How would you feel about an 8v8 mode, and what team combinations would you find ideal? Maybe entirely new games would develop from it, just like hide and seek in 3v3.
Have you seen the Overwatch event skins for Christmas yet? My favorite is Roadhog. The big red nose on his belly is just delightful!
