Overwatch 2 forgot a small detail in its latest trailer. This is quite embarrassing – but also leads to amusing discussions.
In Overwatch 2, the next season starts this week, bringing with it “Venture Forth” (“On to Adventure”), the now 10th season of the hero shooter. A lot has already been shown in advance, including interesting skins and insights into new or revamped maps.
However, in one of these trailers, there was a quite embarrassing mistake that went unnoticed for too long. Because Blizzard had left a voice in the trailer that didn’t belong there.
You can see the trailer for season 10 here:
What happened? In the trailer for Hanaoka, a new map from Overwatch 2, the map was shown in detail in a clip. Music was playing in the background as accompanying material. Suddenly, the music is interrupted by a voice that loudly says: “Music Licensing Reimagined” and a few seconds later “Art List IO”.
Both clearly had no place in the trailer.
What is that voice? This is related to “Watermarks” – similar to how one places the source semi-transparently on an image so that it cannot be used by outsiders.
This is often the case with music when it is either sample music or when the piece has already been presented to the buyer of the music, but the piece is not yet final or the purchase has not yet been processed.
After the incident was picked up in the Overwatch 2 subreddit, Blizzard immediately took the corresponding clip offline – but of course, the community has recorded it. In the following video, you can hear the corresponding passages at second 14 and second 44:
Is this the first incident? Strangely, this is not the first incident of this kind. In a previous trailer, the same passage was forgotten, and back then fans found it hilarious. That was in the last season:
Additionally, there have been some layoffs at Blizzard in recent years. The music department, which has contributed numerous works in the past, was reportedly affected. This seems to explain why Overwatch 2 is now relying on external music and outsourcing this work.
Is the music “stolen”? That is quite certainly not the case. It is likely that Blizzard commissioned or purchased a piece of music and was testing it with the “demo version,” which still contains the spoken watermark. However, the fact that this gets overlooked overlooked again before the final upload of the trailer is rather curious.
But at least Overwatch 2 remains in the conversation somehow.
At least: All heroes in Overwatch 2 are immediately unlocked for everyone.
