Overwatch head Jeff Kaplan officially announced Overwatch 2 during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2019. Some of the new features were presented, though much sounds like Overwatch 2 is simply a paid DLC.
What is Overwatch 2? At BlizzCon 2019, Overwatch 2 was officially announced as the successor to Overwatch. Overwatch 2 aims to entice players with repeatable coop story missions, thereby offering a PvE campaign.
However, what is important is: The whole concept is supposed to include the Overwatch player community. Contrary to previous leaks, the progress from Overwatch (1) will likely be carried over and even shared.
Overwatch 2 apparently excludes no one who does not want to purchase it but instead continues to play Overwatch.
Overwatch 2 – DLC or new game?
What changes in Overwatch 2: Overwatch 2 primarily gives the game a new look. The graphics are polished, everything looks nicer, and there are new features, such as:
- Coop missions (heroes and story)
- Levelable heroes
- Customizable abilities
Additionally, new content will be delivered for Overwatch 2. New maps and new heroes will be released.
One of them has already been confirmed: Sojourn, who was previously known from a leak. However, there is still no detailed information about Sojourn.
That’s why Overwatch 2 feels like a DLC: However, Jeff Kaplan only briefly mentioned an important piece of information:
For all players of the current Overwatch: You will play the same maps as players of Overwatch 2, including all maps that are still to come, and you will be able to play the same heroes as Overwatch 2 players. It will be a shared environment where no one is left behind.
This gives the concept of Overwatch 2 rather the impression that it is a DLC with prettier visuals, a PvE campaign, and cool features that players do not necessarily need.
As it stands, Overwatch fans do not need to buy the second part to stay engaged. Only those who want to try out the new content will likely have to invest. More information on Overwatch 2 will be available in the respective BlizzCon panel.
