Fortnite is a huge success for the developer Epic Games, something that hardly anyone in the studio expected. The quirky co-op shooter could even become the studio’s most successful game to date.
Fortnite is still in Early Access and costs quite a bit of money. Nevertheless, the fun co-op building shooter with its cute comic graphics is selling like hotcakes. This enormous success surprises even the developers at Epic Games.
Fortnite – Over a million copies sold
When Fortnite launched a few weeks ago in Early Access, no one at developer Epic Games expected a big success. But then sales continued to rise, and by now, the colorful online shooter has sold over a million copies – and this is for a paid Early Access game that is supposed to become free-to-play later!
In comparison: The other hit from Epic Games – the original Gears of War – sold less than four million copies in its entire lifetime. Since Fortnite has achieved so many sales in such a short time and even before the actual free-to-play release in 2018, it could become Epic’s most successful game by the end of 2017.
Fortnite – Developers did not expect this rush
Since the launch of Fortnite went extremely well, the developers were not prepared for the large influx of players. According to Epic CEO Tim Sweeney, a multiple of the expected players came to the servers at launch. Therefore, the developers initially had a hard time keeping the servers running under this load.
By now, it seems that Epic Games has managed to tame the huge influx of players. Additionally, this week a large Fortnite update with the new hardcore survival mode has been rolled out on the servers.
