In EVE Online there was recently a great battle between two powerful alliances that even caused the servers to crash.
What kind of battle was it? In a battle unlike anything EVE Online has ever seen, over 10,200 pilots of the MMORPG fought in a single PvP battle last night.
While there have been large space battles with thousands of players in the past, this time there were so many that two world records from the Guinness Book of Records were even broken:
- Largest PvP multiplayer battle in video games (previously 8,825 players)
- The highest number of players competing in PvP simultaneously (previously 6,557)
However, the number was also too much for the EVE Online servers, causing the battle to feel more like a slideshow before the servers completely crashed in the evening and players struggled for hours to log in.
Costly War
What did the fight cost? According to the battle report on WarBeacon.net, the fight lasted 11 hours, with 6,915 players participating directly in the combat actions. However, screenshots show more than 10,200 players, many of whom were acting as logistically support.
In the battle, 3,125 of the 6,915 ships were destroyed, leading to a damage cost of 8.4 trillion ISK. Converted to euros, the lowest estimate according to PlayerAuctions.com suggests this amounts to about €40,000. Other estimates come to much higher amounts.
Who was fighting? The battle involved two coalitions that have been hostile towards each other for years. The Empire of Goonswarm Federation and the WinterCoalition of Fraternity/Frat faced each other.
As is often the case in the struggles for supremacy in EVE Online, it was about territories and resources which the two rival coalitions wanted to secure. For now, the Goonswarm Federation Empire lost, having to forfeit their Keepstar in the battle.
The reason for the defeat was also the server, which allowed many players to participate in the combat with varying degrees of success. Even though the battle was lost, that does not mean that the players of the Empire are giving up; the war has likely just begun.
In EVE Online, there are always fights that destroy thousands of players and euros worth of resources. These epic battles characterize the MMORPG. Furthermore, politics play a bigger role in EVE Online than in many other titles: In the largest space MMORPG on Steam, a massive power struggle is currently underway that could change everything
