The coop RPG shooter Outriders presents itself from an exciting side in its latest broadcast. It is reminiscent of a mix between Diablo and Anthem. MeinMMO also spoke with the developers from People Can Fly, the studio behind Outriders.
What is Outriders? The coop shooter was first presented at E3 2019. Several styles are mixed, resulting in something completely new.
The developers compare themselves most to Diablo, particularly highlighting the RPG factor. It is also meant to be a loot shooter, where you meet in hubs and start missions from there.
Now there is a new broadcast about Outriders. This one presents the game’s story in more detail, but also provides exciting insights into the structure of Outriders.
This is the broadcast: In their 2nd broadcast about Outriders, they talk about the game for a total of about 30 minutes, with recurring insights into the game:
What stands out? At first glance, the shooter looks like Destiny or Anthem, and that is quite accurate. Especially the comparison to Anthem is compelling in many respects. However, one of the biggest differences is the developers’ concept. Outriders is not a Game-as-a-Service game, while Destiny or Anthem are.
The comparisons with Anthem are quite obvious:
- There are hubs from which you can start your missions
- Your character has not only weapons but also abilities that can be leveled up.
- There is loot everywhere – Outriders is just like Anthem a loot shooter
- Many enemies and the setting often remind one of Anthem
- Anthem has 4 classes, the same applies to Outriders
- There is no PvP
- It plays on one planet and not on several or even in space
What do the developers say about the comparison? Looking more closely at Outriders reveals that a comparison also becomes more apparent: It often reminds one of Diablo.
That’s exactly what the developers say about their game. In our interview with Bartosz and Bartek, the two heads of People Can Fly, we discussed a comparison with other games.
We want to compare ourselves to Diablo. The game is becoming more and more the fantasy slasher that was our greatest inspiration. […] We want to invest more effort in the skills and the item-based gameplay rather than just in a shooter game.

We want to add a strong story to create a foundation for the game, to make it larger and to expand it more to other countries.
Are there gameplay insights? If you want to see more of Outriders, we recommend the video from our colleagues at GameStar. They were able to test the shooter:
Outriders is supposed to be an RPG shooter for everyone
Can a shooter fan have fun? Although the developers themselves draw the comparison to Diablo, there should also be something for shooter fans. The mix between RPG elements and shooter elements is important.
The developers respond to the question of whether shooter fans can also have fun as follows:
Outriders still requires mechanical skills like a shooter. Your aim, reload management, and positioning are important. But we have also added great opportunities for power selection, cooldown management, and power combinations to this core shooter gameplay.
Moreover, we have itemization and class builds that require mastering the synergies between your equipment, your powers, and your class builds to maximize your character’s strength.

Can you only play in a team? Outriders is aimed at every type of player. It doesn’t matter if you’re alone or playing in a team, Outriders adapts to you.
This way, your friends can continually join or leave the game. Depending on the number of players, the enemies will adapt and you will face more foes. The difficulty of the bosses will also increase with the number of players.
The developers emphasize that playing in single and multiplayer can be quite different. If you want more loot and a greater challenge, you should play in multiplayer.
An exciting concept – with a future?
What do the developers promise? Outriders is supposed to be finished and fully playable at launch. The story is said to last 40 hours and include 20 chapters. So you should have plenty to do right from the purchase of the game.
That remains to be seen: Outriders connects many concepts together, which certainly provides an exciting, new gaming experience.
However, it must prove that it can remain relevant after the release. Outriders does not rely on Game-as-a-Service, but it still needs to keep players entertained.
What does the developer say about it? The developers haven’t shared too many impressions about the endgame of Outriders yet. It is also not stated whether we can expect raids or similar content.
We can say that much more will come for the endgame, such as new difficulties, and you can also return to side quests that you haven’t completed yet, or to bounties for better rewards.

However, if Outriders can make the endgame exciting and avoid the same mistakes as Anthem, then the new shooter could be a real hidden gem for all fans of Destiny, Diablo, and Co.
