Which MMORPGs did not survive 2025?
In fact, there were not that many MMORPGs that went offline permanently in 2025. The most prominent case is Tarisland, the big online role-playing game from Tencent, which visually reminded many of WoW, but could never break free from its restrictive mobile framework. The servers went offline on November 4, 2025.
The launch trailer of Tarisland:
A second piece of bad news hit all fans of New World at the end of October, but the servers of the MMORPG from Amazon Game Studios are still online. And it seems they will continue to be beyond 2026. However, maintenance mode is already running, and the shutdown of the servers is a done deal.
And then in September there was also the shutdown of Skyforge. The last moments are shown in this video on YouTube. There wasn’t much happening for the farewell. And the fans also had to say goodbye to MapleStory 2 on May 29, 2025.
There were many other farewells for projects still in development:
- Former lead of WoW wanted to revolutionize the genre with his new MMORPG Ghost, now he has to close his studio
- The new PvE MMORPG based on Warhammer is coming to an end – fans are complaining: “The genre is cursed”
- After the end of New World, a developer now has bad news for the LOTR MMORPG: “You would have loved it”
- Microsoft cancels new MMORPG by the ESO makers after 7 years of development
- The crypto MMORPG Ember Sword has run out of money in Early Access, although revenues were generated through the sale of houses
- The anime MMORPG Gran Saga, which is said to have cost 25 million dollars, but had to go offline after just 4 months
Adding to that the many disappointing releases, it was unfortunately not a very good year for MMORPG fans.
The good news: Fans of the genre can look forward to an exciting MMORPG year in 2026. After all, we are expecting some potential hopefuls from Asia.
