During the streaming event FYNG Caggtus, our MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz and our editor-in-chief Leya Jakowski discussed the current state of the genre. Among WoW killers and Asian games, they explain what the genre is currently lacking.
What kind of talk is this? The trio talk took place during the streaming event Find Your Next Game Caggtus on April 13, 2025, in Leipzig. In it, host Julius Jules
Busch speaks with MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski and MeinMMO MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz about the current state of the genre.
They discuss the WoW killers that ultimately failed, the latest MMORPGs from around the world, and the games everyone is waiting for. Additionally, they focus on what an MMORPG actually needs to be successful.

Unfortunately, not much is coming this year
– Yet the expert has hope
What are the promising games? After the introduction, MMORPG expert Karsten Scholz talks about the hopes for the genre that are expected to be released in the coming years. Unfortunately, only one game has been announced for 2025: Chrono Odyssey.
Karsten comments on this situation by saying, “Unfortunately, not much is coming this year.” And that is exactly the problem of the genre: “The flagship projects are missing.” The last bigger releases like Lost Ark or New World have never reached the heights of Final Fantasy XIV or even WoW.
However, the expert is very excited about the unique time feature of the one major release for 2025: As a player in Chrono Odyssey, you move through different time levels – present, future, and past. His red flag is that so far there have only been closed focus group tests. Editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski agrees: The time feature especially makes her ponder.
The three discuss these games, even though it will take longer than the end of 2025 for their release:
- Aion 2
- ArcheAge Chronicles
- Stars Reach
- Ashes of Creation
- Lord-of-the-Rings MMORPG by Amazon
- Warhammer MMO
- League-of-Legends MMO
The first two MMORPGs on the list, Aion 2 and ArcheAge Chronicles, are both expected to be released in the next 24 months. The release dates for the rest are still far in the future and partially uncertain.
However, they all fundamentally have high potential, and while the MeinMMO editor-in-chief often reacts somewhat skeptical, Karsten Scholz is generally optimistic.
