Orbus VR Reborn aims to show what the future of MMORPGs in the virtual reality space could look like. With a major relaunch and new features, the online game will exit Early Access in April.
MMORPG in Virtual Reality
What is Orbus VR? In December 2017, the MMORPG Orbus VR entered Early Access. With the game, the development team wanted to provide a glimpse into a possible VR future of the MMORPG genre. However, this first version was only a kind of framework:
- The graphics are simple and not very detailed
- There are only standard quests where you have to hunt monsters
- There is no class system
- Crafting and resource gathering is very simplistic
Players dive deeper into the game world with a VR headset than is normally possible in an MMORPG. It feels as if you are in this other world.
How was this first version received? In general, players received Orbus VR well. The reviews on Steam are “very positive” with 81%. For many, the immersion of the VR world really represents a new level. However, there is simply not enough to do. The Early Access version only shows where the journey is headed.
Everything still feels raw, like a concept game. This naturally deters players who expect something more.
The relaunch brings almost a new game
What is coming with the relaunch? The development team has now announced a (re)launch. This means the MMORPG is leaving Early Access and aims to provide significantly more content and a generally more rounded and extensive game.
- There will be character classes, including bards, shamans, and two yet undisclosed classes
- The PvP system will be optimized
- You will explore new game areas
- The low-poly graphic style will remain, but is expected to be more detailed
- You will fight new enemies
- You can customize your hero
- Performance and stability will be improved
- New activities will be introduced, including races on the backs of dragons, public events in dungeons, and adventures on airships
- The crafting and gathering system will be overhauled
Is Orbus VR Reborn a new game? So much has changed in the game since the Early Access version that one can almost speak of a new product. Hence the new name. However, anyone who has played Orbus VR may switch to Orbus VR Reborn for free.
When does the VR MMORPG launch? The developers stated that the game’s launch will take place in April 2019. An exact date will be announced later.
What do you need to play? You need a VR headset like HTC Vive or Oculus Rift with touch controllers. Later, more VR headsets from other manufacturers will be supported. A good PC is also required. Minimally, you should have an Intel Core i5-4950 or AMD FX 8350 CPU, along with 8 GB of RAM and an Nvidia GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics card.
