Since the launch of the Legion expansion for World of Warcraft, Legendaries are considered both a blessing and a curse. This hasn’t changed in 2018 either. In this guide, you will learn how to effectively farm Legendaries.

At the moment, legendary items are still among the most important in the game. Although Legion is slowly coming to an end, if you still want to complete your collection or need that one Legendary to reach the next Mythic+ level, our guide will help you.
Since Patch 7.2, Legendaries are easier and more targeted to farm. The patch allows you to narrow down which Legendaries you can obtain.
Farming Legendaries – How to
With the introduction of the “Bad-Luck Protection,” Blizzard wanted to prevent players who play frequently from not receiving items they would like or even need. Behind the system is a hidden counter that describes the probability of a drop. This increases every time you complete an action where you could have obtained a legendary item but did not.
Actions include, among others, completed dungeons, emissary quests, boss kills in raids, and PvP rewards. Theoretically, a Legendary could also be contained in the completion chest of the “Training of the Withered Army.” However, since you cannot effectively farm this, it is left out here.
More Orange in Your Pockets!
By completing the Emerald Nightmare, the Trial of Valor, the Night Hold, and the Tomb of Sargeras weekly in normal and heroic mode, you can expect to receive a Legendary on average every week to every two weeks. The pleasant side effect: Artifact power and titanforged items (especially the Convergence of Fate from Elisande) are still in demand since the nerf has not yet dethroned them.
Additionally, those who regularly engage in PvP or venture into (Mythic+) dungeons drastically increase their chances. Moreover, a weekly +15 offers an item with an item level of 960 as well as another chance for a Legendary in the weekly chest.
But I Need a Specific One!
Here it gets a bit tricky. Since the Broken Shore, it’s possible to buy tokens for a special currency. From these tokens, the relinquished items can also yield legendary items. Since Patch 7.3.2, you can find the corresponding vendor, Thaumaturg Vashreen, on the lower level of the Vindikaar.
The catch: You can buy tokens for a specific equipment slot, and the “relinquished” (in English: “relinquished”) items also have a chance to produce an item from a dungeon, a raid (up to and including the Tomb of Sargeras, including T20 set pieces), or a world quest. Additionally, they can with a small chance create a Legendary. This also applies to Legendaries introduced with Patch 7.2.5.
So How Does It Work?
Since the Nethershards of the Shore can only be used for lower gear now, there is a new currency for the “relinquished” armor pieces: Veiled Argunite. You receive this currency on Argus as a reward for:
- specific world quests
- the weekly quest “Invasion Offensive” from Illidan, for which you must clear 3 invasion points.
- the weekly quest “Fueling a Cursed World” from Turalyon, for which you must loot pristine argunite from invasion points, rare enemies, and treasure chests.
- completing some missions in the order hall.
- killing rare elite enemies on Argus.
- opening treasure chests on Argus.
Veiled Argunite is most effectively farmed by searching for and opening chests on Argus. Especially for solo players, this is the fastest and easiest method.
I Already Have Two or More Legendaries
The counter for Legendaries counts per specialization. For example, for Rogues, if you already possess two Legendaries that are only intended for the Assassination specialization (like the Footpads of the Nightstalker and the Training Shackles of the Zoldyck family), you still have the increased chance in the other two specializations.
It should be noted that items that are useful for each specialization also count for each specialization. Excluded are crafted legendary items, which do not influence the counter at all.
The Trick with Loot Specialization
The fact that the counter is tied to the specialization also helps generally when farming the coveted items. For example, if you have just exchanged all Argunite for tokens without success and then want to try your luck in the raid without getting a “wrong” Legendary, just change your loot specialization.
While there is still the risk that a spec-crossing item will drop, in every other case, the probability for the main specialization remains unchanged.
Legendaries Easy to Buy
Since Patch 7.3.5, you also have the option to simply buy legendary items. From Arkanomant Vridiel in the Dalaran forge, you can buy a Purified Titan Essence for 1000 Awakening Essences.
The item creates a random legendary item for your current specialization and does not count towards “Bad Luck Protection” like crafted items! However, the item binds on pickup and cannot be transferred to Twinks.
The Awakening Essences are the same ones you need to upgrade legendary items to item level 1000. You receive them from the following sources:
- Every boss in the Antorus raid drops essences per ID
- daily heroic dungeon
- the weekly “Mythic+” chest in your order hall
- chests from emissary quests for world quests
- weekly PvP quests
Legendaries for Twinks
If you already have all legendary items for your class, there’s another incentive to keep farming. Since Patch 7.3.2, players who already own all Legendaries receive tokens instead of a duplicate item.
These tokens are account-bound and can also be sent to your Twinks. When used, they create a random legendary item for a specific class.
Since purchased Legendaries do not increase the counter, you can also receive these tokens a bit earlier. If your next Legendary item is about to drop soon and you only have a nearly complete collection, it’s worth it to simply buy the last pieces.
The next time a legendary item should normally drop or you buy a Purified Titan Essence, you will definitely receive an account-bound class token!
With these strategies, while you can’t specifically determine which Legendaries you receive, you can at least narrow down the amount from which chance decides. This makes the road to the goal significantly shorter.
