On Metacritic, the “50 best games of the decade” were determined. Among them are many console games, but only one MMORPG.
What is this list? On Metacritic, all games released between January 1, 2010, and December 6, 2019, that received at least 15 reviews were collected.
These were sorted, and the 50 games with the highest scores were listed chronologically. If a game was released for multiple platforms, the platform with more reviews was selected.
Only one MMORPG makes it onto the list, and just barely
Which MMORPG made it into the top 50? Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers landed in 49th place with a score of 91 out of 100 possible points from critics.
Shadowbringers is repeatedly referred to as the best expansion of the MMORPG. Particularly praised are:
- The excellent story
- The good dungeons
- The revamps of the classes
- The beautiful world design
Criticism has mainly been directed at the gender lock for the new races. Otherwise, the critics were very satisfied with the expansion.
Our author Irie has written her opinion on Shadowbringers in detail.
What about the other MMORPGs? In the last decade, several MMORPGs were released. However, their scores do not match Final Fantasy XIV or the other top 50:
- Guild Wars 2 – 90, while Path of Fire only scores 83
- SWTOR – 85
- ArcheAge – 80
- Black Desert – 73
- The Elder Scrolls Online – 71, while Summerset scores 83
Top 5 are closely ranked
Which games made it into the top 5? No PC game is among the top 5 on Metacritic. Among consoles, the PS4 and Switch lead the way.
However, the best rating went to a game from the Wii that was released in 2010:
- Super Mario Galaxy, Wii – 97
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Switch – 97
- Red Dead Redemption 2, PS4 – 97
- GTA5, PS4 – 97
- Super Mario Odyssey, Switch – 97
Even though all have the same score, there were fine differences in the result, which can no longer be seen when rounded. You can view the complete list here.
