5. Text-based Online Role Play Game
What is it? MMORPGs began with MUDs, Multi-User Dungeons, which emerged as early as the late 1970s/early 1980s. The games were inspired by the text adventures that were popular at the time. Players explored a dungeon together that was only described by text. Commands had to be entered to experience an adventure together with friends.

Why is it not around today? Probably, hardly anyone wants to play a text adventure and only move their character and perform actions through text input. Technically, this was not possible back then. Today, we have modern 3D graphics, voice chats, user-friendly UIs, and controllers to experience a game.
Do players wish for this system to return? No. Time has moved on, and MUDs are a thing of the past. They are an interesting case study in the evolution of online games, but nothing more.
