What is it? Today, a good graphics is highly valued. Players want to be as close to the action as possible, to see the cool equipment on the hero and to feel truly immersed in another world. Powerful computers and fast internet connections make this possible.
However, in the past, developers were more limited. The events in many role-playing games were presented from an overhead perspective. You looked down at your hero, as you still do in Diablo. This also offered a tactical overview.
MMORPGs like Ultima Online offered this iso view, which was well received back then.
Why is it not around today? As mentioned, good graphics play a crucial role in computer games today. It is possible to present a game world in extreme detail from the third-person perspective or first-person view, which contributes to immersion.
Do players wish for this system to return? While there are new games that rely on iso view, such as Albion Online or Legends of Aria, these titles are aimed at a smaller audience. Iso view is no longer what most MMO fans desire.
