Onimusha may be familiar to some of you as a video game series from Capcom. The horror survival game has many similarities to Resident Evil, but is set in a completely different environment. Now an anime based on the video game series is set to premiere on Netflix in a few weeks.
What is Onimusha as a video game?
- The Onimusha series consists of four main games and was released between 2001 and 2006, with a remaster of the first part following in 2018
- Onimusha takes place during the Sengoku period (approx. 1467-1603) in Japan and is inspired by real events and figures
- A great Japanese warlord is resurrected from the dead and wants to conquer Japan with an army of the undead
- As samurai, we try to deter the warlord from his plans
- Onimusha was developed by Capcom and has some parallels to Resident Evil
Onimusha means something like demon hunter and tells the story of samurai Samanosuke in the first part. He lives in a time when Japanese generals fought for power and territory with their forces. However, the legendary general Nobunaga Oda is a particular evil due to his army of demons.
In the second part of the series, the perspective shifts to Jubei Yagyu, whose village was almost completely wiped out by the wicked general Nobunaga. Therefore, he embarks on a quest for revenge as the sole survivor.
In the third part, Samanosuke takes the lead role again, but this time he is transported to modern France. The fourth part returns to the original direction and revolves around Hideyasu “Soki” Yuki, the illegitimate son of a servant of Nobunaga.

What we already know about the anime on Netflix
Netflix is now bringing the video game series as an anime. After hits like Arcane, The Witcher, and The Last of Us, Onimusha is the next Netflix adaptation that promises great potential.
What is the anime about? The Onimusha series would provide plenty of content to make an entire anime. Nevertheless, this production will tell a completely different story. At the center of the story is the warrior Musashi Miyamoto, who uses two different swords in battle.
He has 33 days to eliminate the undead, just like in the video game series.
The character is based on the real person of the same name, who was a legendary swordsman. At the same time, the main character is inspired by the famous actor Toshiro Mifune, who starred in over 150 films such as Seven Samurai.
The anime stands out especially for its animation style. The series is partly drawn, while CGI technology is also used. Sublimation Studio is responsible for the anime, which has also created the anime for Dragon’s Dogma.
When does the anime start on Netflix? If you are interested in the anime, you need to mark November 2, 2023, in red on your calendar. The Onimusha anime is set to premiere on Netflix on that date.
