In the manga of One Piece, things are currently turbulent. Dr. Vegapunk is spilling the beans and revealing some secrets about the world. He has also revealed who is behind Joy Boy, with whom Luffy is compared since his awakening of the Gear-5 powers.

This is currently happening in the manga: Dr. Vegapunk continues his transmission from Chapter 1113. Dr. Vegapunk is the scientist who has already conducted many experiments for the World Government and is now being hunted by them. He previously revealed that the world in One Piece will sink into the ocean. This is likely related to the beam attack from the clouds that is controlled by the World Government.
So who is Joy Boy now? In the current chapter, he finally talks about Joy Boy. Until now, we only knew that,
- he was supposed to help the fishmen lift the Noah’s Ark from the ocean floor around 800 years ago.
- Luffy is the new incarnation of Joy Boy. The giant elephant Zunesha mentioned his name when Luffy awakened his Gear-5 powers.
Dr. Vegapunk explains that Joy Boy lived “in an advanced kingdom” 900 years ago. This must refer to the “Ancient Kingdom,” which had numerous robots. It fell around 800 years ago and is not mentioned in any history books.
Therefore, Joy Boy must have died many years ago. The Pirate King Gol D. Roger mentioned during his stay on Laugh Tale that he would have liked to live at the same time as Joy Boy.

What else does Dr. Vegapunk reveal about Joy Boy? Joy Boy is said to have had a body that could stretch like rubber. Furthermore, his fighting style was similar to that of the sun god Nika, who was a hero figure in the Elbaf Kingdom. No wonder Zunesha described Luffy as an incarnation of Joy Boy.
Presumably, Joy Boy was one of the first people to gain Nika’s devil powers due to a wish. However, this information has not yet been confirmed.
Additionally, Joy Boy is said to have been the first pirate in history to set out to sea. Thus, he was already a forerunner of Luffy and all the other pirates several hundred years ago.
What else do we learn? Besides Joy Boy, Dr. Vegapunk tells other exciting things. These include:
- His hypothesis is that sea levels will rise by one meter due to earthquakes.
- We see the “Mother Flame” for the first time: It is a small flame in a gigantic tank.
Additionally, we see many characters and their reactions to what Dr. Vegapunk is telling. Unfortunately, the manga is taking a break in the following week. So we have to wait a little longer until we learn more secrets from Dr. Vegapunk.
