Which pirate is it about? The pirate in question is Jewelry Bonney. She has the ability to change the age of herself and others through her Devil Fruit. In a Q&A from SBS 68, Eiichiro Oda stated that Bonney was 22 years old before the time skip.
There has long been suspicion that she is lying about her true age:
- The Five Elders refer to her as a ‘little girl’ when they talk about her. However, she could also be seen as a little girl by the older gentlemen in her early twenties.
- Oda stated her age as 22. However, he added the note that this was just an estimate based on her appearance. This additional note was likely more important than we could have guessed at the time.
- In Chapter 1092, Kizaru mentions that Bonney has grown since the last time he saw her. He adds that “kids today grow up fast.” This implies that Bonney has grown faster than usual.
There were also numerous clues from the current Egghead Arc and the flashback about the sad story of Bartholomew Bear and Jewelry Bonney. One of the Five Elders has now revealed in the current manga chapter how old she really is.

How old is Bonney? Ethanbaron V. Nusjuro states that Bonney is a 12-year-old child who has the power to destroy entire nations. She has the highest authority over the Pacifista army, which consists of artificial versions of her father.
This confirms what could already be suspected beforehand: Bonney is actually 12 years old and has made herself appear older with her Devil Fruit than she actually is. Therefore, Oda concealed Bonney’s true age during the previous Q&A.
Before the time skip, she was 10 years old, and currently, she is 12. There have been several hints previously, but only through Nusjuro do we know exactly how old she is. Various Wiki pages on One Piece have already confirmed her age as 12 years. However, in the sources mentioned on the Wiki pages, the sentence that Bonney is really 12 years old has never been stated.
The Five Elders are considered the highest authority of the World Government and are nearly immortal. Bonney has long been a thorn in the side of the World Government. If anyone knows Bonney’s true age, it is the Five Elders.
Why does she hide her age? She set sail to search for her father. To become a taken seriously pirate, she might have decided to conceal her true age. As a 12-year-old, it would be significantly harder to be taken seriously by her crew members and others.
Additionally, Bartholomew Bear suggested in Chapter 1098 that he and Bonney would only visit the Sky Islands when she is 20 years old. She likely wanted to justify through her powers that she is setting off on her journey before her 20th birthday.
