In Monster Hunter Wilds, the various weapons are not only a useful tool but for many, they are part of their personality. Some weapon types are more popular and better than others. The lance is often underestimated, but MeinMMO editor Nikolas Hernes has come to love it. A video shows why.
What kind of video is it? The channel yourtopgamingclips showcases a video on TikTok featuring the user Kyrios034. There, you can see him fighting against Nu Udra, the fire octopus, which gives some players a tough time. He demonstrates a good strategy in combat with the lance.
You can see him performing the iconic lance thrust, where he runs until his stamina runs out. He swirls around the tentacles that do not block the thrust. In other words, he continuously jabs at the tentacles, which get cut off in rows. A good tactic to significantly weaken Nu Udra.
I myself am a big fan of the lance, with which I played a large part of the main game. And what can I say, while the lance is considered the weakest weapon in the game according to our weapon tier list, Wilds has made it as fun as ever.
The lance is tough and hefty
What do I like about the lance in Monster Hunter Wilds? For a long time, I considered the lance to be a rather boring weapon that I didn’t even want to touch. Hiding behind a shield and poking every now and then? That sounded like a nightmare to me in a dynamic series like Monster Hunter.
However, in a replay of Monster Hunter World 2024, I decided to give it a try, and I actually found enjoyment in the lance. Especially the charging thrust was a fun attack. At the start of the Wilds campaign, I took the lance with me and was thrilled because it felt really hefty.
While you are still somewhat of a tank, the gameplay experience has significantly improved compared to the predecessors. The attacks feel heftier, as if you are a berserker delivering a strong blow after a successful block. This feeling is complemented by the focus attack, which turns the oversized toothpick into a mighty drill.
Blocks also feel as good as never before. This is due to the audiovisual design of the perfect blocks. This isn’t just satisfying; it feels like you are the last bastion in the fight against an apocalyptic threat.
The lance shows what Monster Hunter Wilds does quite well in general. Aside from the story, there are not many cutscenes because you have situations in combat that other games would only feature as cutscenes.
What are the disadvantages of the lance? One of the biggest drawbacks is that the lance is not as flashy
as other weapons. There are no spectacular combos like with the great sword or big explosions like with the gunlance. As with the gunlance, you also need to work with short dashes, which feel unfamiliar when playing other weapons.
Nevertheless, I urge: regularly change your weapon type. That’s how I do it too. Trying out and learning new techniques, strategies, and mechanics is the most fun for me in the Monster Hunter series.
Additionally, Monster Hunter Wilds is not a game where I want to maximize the damage of a build; I simply want to enjoy the combat system, and I do that with many different weapons, including the lance.
