The universe of Fallout is full of dangerous enemies and creatures. One of them is as famous as it is dangerous. The characters from the series Fallout Season 2 seem to be soon facing a Deathclaw. But what kind of monster is that?
What kind of enemy do the characters in Season 2 of Fallout have to face? At the Opening Night Live of gamescom 2025, a new trailer for Season 2 of Fallout was finally shown. The trailer ends with a creature that many fans have been wanting to see for a long time: a Deathclaw.
In the trailer, even the experienced Ghoul, who takes on many enemies, runs away. That’s a pretty good idea because the Deathclaw is rightfully considered one of the most dangerous creatures in the Wasteland.

The Deathclaw existed before
What is a Deathclaw actually? The Deathclaw looks like a gigantic lizard, usually having two horns on its head and huge claws. In terms of movement, the Deathclaw resembles a large raptor. It moves on two legs.
Unlike other creatures in the Wasteland, the Deathclaw was not simply turned into a large monster by radiation; it was created before the Great War that turned the world into a Wasteland in 2077. The U.S. government developed Deathclaws during experiments as a replacement for foot soldiers.
The Deathclaw is primarily based on the three-horned chameleon, which was crossed with several other animals. It is unclear how the Deathclaws ended up in the Wasteland, but it can be assumed that they escaped from captivity after the war.
Some Deathclaws are said to have been victims of experiments again in the 22nd century. The Master, formerly Richard Moreau, is the ruler of the Super Mutants, whom we meet in the first Fallout game from 1997. He is said to have genetically manipulated specimens of Deathclaws.
It is unclear which Deathclaw species represents the majority in the Fallout universe.
Over the years, Deathclaws multiplied and became one of the most dangerous creatures in the Wasteland.
A dangerous hunter
How do Deathclaws live? A group of Deathclaws is led by an alpha pair, meaning the strongest Deathclaw couple. To regain the territory of a group, both must be killed because if only the female dies, the male remains in the territory. If an alpha male dies, the female seeks a new partner for reproduction.
As with other animal species, the horns are a sign of their attractiveness to other partners.
Deathclaw females always choose the strongest partner in the pack and then lay eggs in nests in dark places. This produces strong young Deathclaws that represent an almost perfect predator due to their genetic experiments.
Despite their idea as a killing machine
, Deathclaws are not evil creatures. They act instinctively and territorially as a pack, although individual specimens can occasionally be found. However, one should think twice about engaging in a fight. Due to their stature, skin, and huge horns, they are not only difficult to kill.
With their horns and huge claws, they can grab and pin human opponents. Taking out an entire pack is therefore an almost impossible task.
Another organization wanted intelligent Deathclaws
Are there intelligent Deathclaws? The Enclave, a secret military organization, intended to use Deathclaws after the war as dangerous but cheap foot soldiers. To this end, they also conducted experiments, like the Master. A pack of intelligent Deathclaws was created, led by Gruthar. You can learn about this in the game Fallout 2 from 1998.
The Enclave aimed to use the Deathclaws to take over Vault 13, but the creatures realized through their intelligence that they did not have to obey. They formed their own society, but the Enclave seemingly killed all intelligent Deathclaws due to the revolt.
In Fallout 3, the Enclave also managed to control Deathclaws and use them as a weapon, but the Steel Brotherhood ultimately managed to prevent that.
Deathclaws have always been a part of the Fallout world and are present in almost every part of the series. And they always pose a great danger to the player.
