Maxroll.gg is one of the most important websites for guides and information on all Diablo games in the international arena. Now the editorial team announces that they will stop covering Diablo Immortal. The decision was difficult but necessary.
What kind of website is this? Maxroll.gg provides guides and information about Diablo 2: Resurrected, Diablo 3, and Lost Ark. The website consists of experts who collectively spend thousands of hours in the games. Our own Tier List for Diablo 3 and the Tier List of the best classes in Diablo Immortal are partially based on their information.
Even before the release of Diablo Immortal, the new mobile game was a significant title for the site. The editorial members occasionally played since the technical alpha, even helping with the game’s development.
The Maxroll team also includes the YouTuber echohack (featured image), who discovered the loot limits of Diablo Immortal. However, coverage is now coming to an end.
As of Wednesday, June 30, 2022, Maxroll officially stops covering Immortal. The website announced this in a post on the website. The decision was not easy but necessary.
A major criticism of Diablo Immortal is the legendary gems. In the video, we explain what that actually is:
Diablo Immortal “goes against our values”
Why is Maxroll stopping Diablo Immortal? The statement mentions 5 reasons why Maxroll is no longer covering Diablo Immortal. The most important is the Pay2Win factor, which repeatedly causes an uproar.
You can also listen to more about the topic Pay2Win on the MeinMMO podcast:
Maxroll cannot support a system like this. Even though they have invested over 10,000 hours of work and a lot of money into building the project on the site, they cannot reconcile continuing work with their values:
The predatory Pay2Win system massively exceeds what is considered the norm in mobile gaming. Gambling addiction is real and can completely ruin lives. Even if 99% of players have perfect impulse control, we cannot endure what happens to the remaining 1%. This completely goes against our values, and we no longer want to be a part of it.
Another reason, according to Maxroll, is the lackluster gameplay. Even outside of Pay2Win, Immortal is technically not as good as it could be. Furthermore, the Free2Play gameplay does not feel “rewarding” enough.
While it is possible to farm for 8 hours a day – despite loot limits – the end result is still only minimally more combat rating. It feels “terrible” and does not provide much motivation.
What happens next? Maxroll has considered how they could still justify working on Immortal. However, it would require the Pay2Win systems to be reduced, and the Free2Play options to be massively expanded.
The team currently does not see that possibility with Blizzard, not even with the first major update. Therefore, the branch remains closed.
For the upcoming Season 27 of Diablo 3, however, the editorial team will be back and is also currently working hard to cover Path of Exile.
By the way, even MeinMMO demon Cortyn has a similar attitude towards the topic – and Blizzard in general:
