OGame is one of the best-known names in the MMO field. This may be because in the past, pretty much everyone had access to it, even with lousy computers. The game has been around for 20 years now – Now even on your mobile devices.
What kind of game is it? OGame is essentially a classic free-to-play browser game with stylish sci-fi flair. You start with a single planet, which you slowly expand while spreading across the galaxy.
New planets fall under your control, you build up your economy and military. Alone or in a clan (“Alliance”), you work to gradually bring the galaxy under your control.
OGame and its counterparts don’t have particularly high graphical demands. You mainly plan your next steps through clicks and numbers. Certain advantages can be purchased with real money.
Roughly speaking, one could say: OGame is more an economic simulation where you need to plan your empire as best as possible and defend it against hundreds of other players in your galaxy. By the way, it was created solely by the German developer Alexander Rösner, aka “Legor”. Today, a whole team from the provider Gameforge in Karlsruhe is working on it.
What makes it so special? OGame is one of the first browser games of its kind and has been running continuously for 20 years. Since it runs in a web browser and requires little computing power, even players with poor hardware can easily participate.
The great feature for which OGame is known are the attacks. You can see when someone is attacking you and, with perfect timing, prevent a massive military force from destroying your entire fleet.
If you are around 30 today, you might remember: Dozens of students set their alarms to wake up at 4:38 AM to ensure their fleet is safe or to launch an attack. They just caught up on sleep during math class…
In between, new “worlds” with special rules were repeatedly opened – for example, with higher production rates or faster gameplay. This ensured variety and fresh air. Now the developers have even bigger plans.
