Those following the main quest in New World (Steam) will stumble upon the quest “The Weakness of the Ego” around level 16 to 18. This quest is extremely annoying, and that’s why we at MeinMMO provide tips on how to complete it as easily as possible.
What kind of quest is it? “The Weakness of the Ego” is part of the main storyline and intended for players level 18. However, you can accept it earlier and theoretically complete it at a lower level.
Basically, the quest sounds relatively simple. You only need to find certain materials:
- 3x Water
- 3x the mushroom Bluecap
- 3x the plant Rivercress Stalk
But that is not as easy as it sounds on paper.
High gathering skill needed for quest
What makes the quest so annoying? Water is obviously not a problem. But collecting the plants is extremely annoying.
On the one hand, you need gathering skill level 30 for Rivercress. This means you have to run around the world trying to find herbs, hemp, or berries. Because all other plants require at least level 30 or higher. And these plants are currently sought after by dozens of players.
On the other hand, the two special plants Bluecap and Rivercress are quite rare. Right now, so many players are looking for these plants that they are hardly found on full servers. Anyone who is also in the wrong area will not even be able to find Bluecap.
Why is the quest so important? Through the main story, you will also get to the Azoth Staff around level 18. With it, you can seal a breach of corruption, which will become important for world events later.
You should definitely complete the quest.
The quest “The Weakness of the Ego” requires a lot of patience
The fastest alternative is to simply buy the materials at the auction house. However, if you want to solve the quest yourself, here are some tips.
This is how to complete the quest: First, you need to improve your gathering rank, and you can do this even before you have accepted the quest.
In theory, this is easiest done in the Windcircle area at the fast travel point, which the main story also leads you to automatically. There, tons of hemp plants grow, and if you harvest all in the vicinity, you will quickly reach the rank.
In practice, however, dozens of players are trying to do exactly the same thing as you, and the hemp in that area is extremely contested.
That’s why we recommend harvesting the hemp plants around the city First Light and the associated Fort. This is where you will pass just before the quest “The Weakness of the Ego” anyway. Harvest all the plants twice and you’ve completed an annoying aspect.
In the second step, you then need to harvest Bluecap and Rivercress:
- Rivercress can always be found near water and especially in the Windcircle and Everfall areas
- Bluecap can only be found (!) in the Windcircle area
Again, it’s a good idea to harvest directly around the fast travel point for both plants, as both plants grow there. But as mentioned, many other players are also gathering, leading to frustration when plants are constantly stolen from your nose.
Therefore, we recommend simply collecting Bluecap and Rivercress when you walk back towards the fast travel point from First Light. At the transition to the Windcircle area, there are plenty of these plants, and you also save travel costs:
Once you have completed the quest, you will be one big step closer to the Azoth Staff.
