Christopher Nolan is currently considered one of the greatest directors of Hollywood. For his latest film ‘Oppenheimer’, he cast real scientists as extras.
Who is it about? Christopher Nolan is regarded as one of the greatest film directors of our time and has been nominated for an Oscar multiple times – most recently with ‘Dunkirk’ in the categories of ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Director’.
Nolan is known among film fans for the Batman trilogy ‘The Dark Knight’, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet.
On July 20, 2023, ‘Oppenheimer’, the latest film from the 52-year-old director, will be released, featuring Cillian Murphy in the lead role and telling the story of the development of the atomic bomb.
Real scientists as extras
What’s the deal with the scientists? Christopher Nolan and lead actor Cillian Murphy spoke with the American magazine Entertainment Weekly about their joint film ‘Oppenheimer’.
During the interview, Murphy praised the high caliber of the actors involved in the film and how professionally and well-prepared they were. Christopher Nolan then added that this also applied to the extras featured in the film.
Nolan explained that they brought in real scientists as extras because the film (Oppenheimer) deals with the development of the atomic bomb and thus a scientific topic. He mentioned that he had worked with extras on film sets who were only thinking about lunch during the shoot.
However, Nolan wanted to stay true to the story behind the film and expected reactions from the extras and the ability to improvise:
We were at the real Los Alamos and had a bunch of real scientists as extras. We needed the extras to provide reactions and improvise, and we got a kind of improvised, very educated speeches. It was really fun to listen to them.
You know it from shoots where you have a lot of extras around you who are more or less thinking about lunch. These guys were thinking about the geopolitical implications of nuclear weapons and knew a lot about it.
It was really a great reminder every day: We really have to strive, we have to stay true to the story here and really know what we are doing.

What kind of film is it? Oppenheimer is a historical drama. The film tells the story of Julius Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist who was tasked with the Manhattan Project, that is, the construction of the atomic bomb.
Julius Robert Oppenheimer is portrayed by British actor Cillian Murphy, who previously worked with Christopher Nolan in Inception. Alongside him are other renowned Hollywood actors like Rami Malek, Robert Downey Jr., and Matt Damon.
By the way, Christopher Nolan is not the only director who opted against traditional extras for his film. For the 1993 ‘Super Mario’ film, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel resorted to strippers from North Carolina.
