When a new expansion launches in Final Fantasy XIV, most players first play the main quest. However, for one of the cutest new companions in Dawntrail, it’s worth leaving the MSQ behind.
What kind of companion is this? The absolutely adorable companion in question is something very special: a talking corn on the cob that walks on two legs. With a brush-like ponytail on its head and a cloth draped in Tural style over its shoulder.
When you touch the minion with /stroke
, the green leaves around the corn open up with joy. And when you use the command /poke
, it jumps out of the green husk and falls back again.
The minion is called Master Corn
and looks like this:

Which quests do you need to complete? The quest line that unlocks Master Corn starts in Tural’s capital, Tuliyollal. You need to search for the NPC Corny Being
at X: 16.4 and Y: 12.8. We have marked the quest here on the map – walk to the red X:

Talk to the corny being and accept the quest The Beginning of a Hungry Journey
. Your first task will be to distribute corn cobs to the townsfolk. Upon completion, you will receive Tural Corn and unlock the next quest.
Once you reach the end of the quest line, Master Corn will stay with you permanently as a minion.
A quest so good, the main quest can wait
What makes the quest so good? The story around Master Corn is a lot of fun: for one, the corn continuously throws puns at you – what else – about corn. On the other hand, everything is sprinkled with jokes like those from the popular quest line surrounding Hildibrand Manderville.
The Hildi-quests have been a staple of the game since the 1.0 iteration of Final Fantasy XIV. In these, you accompany Hildibrand Manderville, a private detective, on his work. Also along is Nashu Mhakaracca, Hildibrand’s sidekick with a penchant for explosive gadgets.
The quests are characterized by their crude, exaggerated humor and the corresponding wild NPCs. Those who enjoy anime or manga-style humor will have a blast. And indeed, the quests about Master Corn fall into this category.
This quest is particularly recommended in English: The localization team led by Koji Fox is known for taking a few more liberties in the translation from Japanese. For the corn quests, this means they will inundate you with corn puns until you can’t take it anymore.
While you definitely should check out this quest line, there is one that you should leave aside until a certain point in the main quest: it spoils the main quest for you. We’ve gathered all the details here for you: Final Fantasy XIV players warning: Better leave a side quest out for now
