After a few messages, HasanAbi invited Rhyzohm to a Discord call to discuss the matter.
Rhyzohm argued that it is not okay to use Cracker casually. People should not be judged based on skin color and origin. HasanAbi has too large of a reach, and the viewers receive the message from Rhyzohm that it is okay to just throw around such words.
HasanAbi replied that the word is indeed mean, but not as bad as, for example, the N-word. White people have always held the position of power in America, especially oppressing black people.
The streamer said that there cannot be racism against white people and he wants to awaken people in that sense.
The word “Cracker” is said to be responsible for HasanAbi’s ban
After the debate with the viewer, HasanAbi was banned on Twitch. He himself wrote a tweet in which he stated that the word “Cracker” is to blame.
Twitch itself has not commented on the incident so far. Therefore, it is not known whether it was really the word or something else that was responsible for HasanAbi’s ban.
The community reacts divided under the tweet:
- Bruce Ray believes: “The word Cracker is not racist.” Other users reply to him and think that it can rather be dismissed as an insult.
- Commiechrundle is stunned: “I am really upset about this. This is the dumbest reason to ban someone from Twitch.”
- Lichzim agrees with the ban: “Let’s hope he stays banned. He’ll probably come back anyway in the next few days.”
- IntelDoge and Greekgodx find the ban “Good.”
Ex-Twitch streamer Ludwig has already had to endure several bans since his switch to YouTube: Ludwig has been banned on YouTube 3 times, yet still enjoys it more than Twitch
The streamer Hasan “HasanAbi” Piker (30) was banned from Twitch on December 14. According to his statements, the word “Cracker” was the reason. MeinMMO reports what exactly happened.
This is the background:
- Two moderators in HasanAbi’s Twitch chat were banned on December 11 for using the word “Cracker” – a term that is now used to insult white people. The streamer found that completely exaggerated and justified it by saying that both were not white (via Twitter).
- HasanAbi then tried to get a statement from another streamer “Myth” by asking what he thought of the word “Cracker” and that his mods were banned for it. Myth is also black (via YouTube, from minute 0:50). The comments under the video suggest that HasanAbi wanted to elicit a statement from Myth that would support his side.
- HasanAbi repeatedly brought up the topic on his Twitter account. He said that Twitch should also consider the word “Nazi” as a reason for a ban, as people use it against white, racist individuals and it is both racist and unacceptable, according to the streamer (via Twitter).
This is behind the term “Cracker”: In the United States, the term is partly considered a racist insult for white people, comparable to the N-word for black people.
Literally translated, it means “cracker”. There are various origins of the term. A common reference from earlier eras corresponds to the “cracking of whips” used by slave drivers for punishment or for driving.
HasanAbi holds Cracker debate with viewer
On December 14, HasanAbi started a stream in which a viewer “Rhyzohm” spammed in his chat. The viewer does not understand why the word “Cracker” is used so casually, as HasanAbi does.
