The survival shooter Rust has now received a major update. It comes with a lot of changes to the gunplay.
Rust is a survival game. Your goal is to gather resources, build your own shelter, and of course, survive. In 2021 and 2022, Rust also gained great popularity on Twitch and set new records in player numbers.
This week, Rust received a major update that primarily changes the gunplay. The reactions from players are mostly positive.
The developers are changing weapon recoil and introducing a crosshair
What are the biggest changes? The biggest and most important change is the new recoil that has been implemented for almost every weapon. According to the developers, the recoil is supposed to be easier to learn. The new recoil is also supposed to prevent scripts from handling it easily – making cheating harder.
The recoil is replaced by a target drift. If you use an automatic weapon, it will become less accurate the longer you hold down the trigger.
For the first time, there is now also a crosshair in the game. You no longer have to cheat with your gaming monitor, but can use one directly in the game. When using rifles or a crossbow, it will be displayed automatically.
Depending on what you do, the crosshair will get larger or smaller. If you run across the map, the crosshair gets larger and less accurate. However, if the crosshair bothers you, you can easily turn it off in the game settings.
What else has changed? If someone attacks you, you will see blood splatter in your field of vision. This shows the player from which direction you were attacked.
Two other changes may also be of interest:
- There is now a new ammunition mixing table where you can craft basic ammunition much faster than before.
- Additionally, the Hapis Island is making a return with this update. The previous update removed the buggy map, which is now returning revised.
- In PvP, you can now also use an extended magazine. This gives you 25% more ammunition than before.
Many users praise the update for Rust, but there is also criticism
How is the community reacting? In several threads on reddit, users are discussing the new update (via reddit.com). Some believe that Rust is finally becoming more accessible and that the new recoil makes the game significantly better.
Other users who have already invested hundreds of hours into the game feel taken aback by the changes. After all, they have invested dozens of hours to perfect their weapons and handling, and now everything is different.
Another user comments on this sarcastically, writing:
Games need changes and updates to evolve, and that’s how Rust changes the recoil to shift the focus from gunplay to gameplay feel and team play.
If you can spend all 2,000 to 3,000 hours learning the old AK spray, then you can easily spend <100 hours learning the new one.
