The tactical shooter Squad has become a real insider tip in recent years. Now you can use the game, which normally costs 45 euros, for free for a limited time.
What is Squad? Squad is a tactical multiplayer military shooter with a first-person perspective and a strong focus on realism, teamwork, and communication. Many also refer to it as a hardcore shooter, as the level of realism is extremely high.
Squad can best be described as a mixture of the military simulation Arma and Battlefield. Squad positions itself exactly between the two titles. It combines:
- the speed and accessibility of Battlefield
- with the scale and realism of Arma.
On the battlefield, everything revolves around organized squads within a large team that cleverly use both the environment and military equipment and gear in conjunction to engage in and win tactical battles against another team.
Fights with up to 100 players are possible on 20 diverse maps.
How long is the shooter free? From Friday, December 11th to Monday, December 14th, you can play Squad for free. You can use this time to thoroughly test the shooter.
If you like it, you can purchase it during the same period for 25% less than usual.
96% positive ratings on Steam
How is the shooter received on Steam? In the last 30 days, there have been 5,021 reviews for the shooter, of which 96% were positive. Even considering the 5 years of development in Early Access, the shooter received good ratings. Of the total of 50,766 ratings, 89% were positive.
The reviews praise:
- The good gameplay that is based on teamwork
- The gunplay that emphasizes a low time-to-kill and strategy
- The good, but not outstanding graphics
- The community, which is said to be nice to newcomers. It is recommended to join a clan.
- No pay-to-win and no classes hidden behind real money.
Criticism mainly concerns:
- Background issues, such as running private servers, which are very performance-intensive and whose admin tools are said to be lacking
- The community outside of clans, which is said to be toxic, as in many other shooters.
What do the player numbers look like? According to Steamcharts.com, around 5,508 players played on average per day in recent days, with a peak of up to 9,601 players online at the same time. The servers are therefore well-visited.
Despite the good ratings, Squad still counts as an insider tip.
Who should check out Squad? If you only enjoy fast, action-packed shooter gameplay on small maps where you level up or unlock something every few seconds, call down overpowered kill streaks, or go around as a one-man army, then you will likely not be happy with Squad. The shooter does not provide the traditional CoD experience.
However, if you prefer games from the Battlefield series or generally large-scale battles with a lot of planning, tactics, and communication, then Squad might be just the right insider tip for you. Fans of the Arma series could also be quite happy here.
In terms of size, cooperation, communication, intensity, and realism, there is currently hardly another multiplayer shooter that implements all of that better and combines it.
Feel free to share your experiences with Squad in the comments if you have already tried it. If you are still looking for a new shooter, you might find some options here:
