In the League of Legends, the professional team G2 Esports lost their first LoL match in 2020. The favorites were defeated by Misfits Gaming after 6 consecutive wins. The bot laner, Rasmus “Caps” Winther, had a disastrous day – but hardly anyone holds it against him. People have said they already missed “Craps,” according to online comments.
What kind of match was it? That was Match 7 in the LEC Spring 2020 between the heavy favorites G2 Esports and Misfits Gaming.
G2 Esports had appeared almost unbeatable in recent weeks. They were just one series away from becoming world champions last year. This time, they had won the first 6 games of the LEC in a row and had taken down co-favorites like Fnatic.
These were the key picks:
- The jungler from Misfits, Razork, played Ekko in the jungle – especially dangerous as a ganker in the early game.
- For G2 Esports, Wunder played Sona on the top lane, who is primarily a support.
- Caps played on the bot lane Aphelios, who is currently considered extremely strong due to his range. However, Aphelios is also “squishy,” doesn’t take much damage, and has little mobility.
The Sufferings of Young Caps
This is how the match went: The match started well for G2 Esports: Misfits started aggressively with a gank on the bot lane. Here, Caps died and had to give up the first blood, but after the fight, it was 3:1 for G2 Esports. Jungler Jankos had secured 2 kills on Gragas, and the third kill was taken by G2’s support.
However, Caps on Aphelios was already 13 CS behind against Bvoy on Xayah.
Shortly thereafter, the misery for Caps began. He was often too far forward on the bot lane or in an unfavorable 1vs2 situation and had to die, especially when the jungler came by. After 8 minutes, Caps was already at 0/3/1. This was disastrous, but the next 7 minutes were even worse.
Until the 14th minute, G2 Esports managed to keep the match somewhat balanced. Jankos on Gragas and Perkz on Yasuo each had 3 kills and were able to hold their ground.
But Caps was already brutally behind with 0/6/4. The top lane, Wunder on Sona, also became a weakness and fell further behind in the lane without being able to make any real impact on the other lanes.
Caps Sets Negative Record
In team fights, Caps proved to be a breaking point, as he was the weakest link, hence Caps went down in team fights. Caps became a punching bag for Misfits Gaming – they took him down as a snack.
For those who die often in LoL, miss out on gold and experience points, fall further behind in strength, and become an easy target for opponents, especially as a bot laner. They are generally “glass cannons” in LoL, dealing heavy damage but unable to take any.
After 15 minutes, Caps had already died 7 times, but had yet to secure a single kill. This was an all-time negative record, as no one had ever performed so poorly in the LEC before, reported LoLEsports Stats.
This is how the match ended: Even though Jankos and Perkz fought bravely, the match was decided after about 20 minutes. After a fight at Baron, the score was 15:10 for Misfits Gaming with a 6000 gold lead. From then on, the match only went in one direction.
In the end, Misfits Gaming won with 22-11 in just 30 minutes. Jungler Razork on Ekko was crowned MVP with 8-2-6. Top laner Dan Dan on the new LoL champ Sett (5-2-5), and ADC Bvoy on Xayah (5-2-10) also had strong stats.
At G2 Esports, Jankos and Perkz fought bravely, but it wasn’t enough.
Nice to See You, Craps
These are the reactions: Rasmus “Caps” Winther (20) is the most popular LoL player in Europe. In the AllStar voting in 2019, Caps received 24.4 percent of the European votes, clearly placing him in first place.
Caps has a peculiarity: Every time he plays poorly, fans claim that it wasn’t Caps but a much worse version of him: “Craps.”
After the defeat, fans said:
- “We wondered where Craps was. We haven’t seen him in a long time! Nice to see we found him before the playoffs.”
- “I was worried about Craps, I was ready to send a search team after him.”
- “Hey Craps, when was the last time we saw each other?”
- “I’m glad Craps can still play, I thought G2 Esports had benched him for good.”
There are memes showing that Caps did everything to hold “Craps” back for months, but the match against Misfits Gaming was a breaking point.
There are some jokes about FORG1VEN, who retired from Schalke. Now memes are popping up suggesting that G2 Esports should recruit him for the bot lane.
Wunder also has to bear some criticism. It has been said that his Sona gameplay stifled any hype for “Sona Toplane.” No one in solo queue of LoL would touch it anymore.
G2 Esports itself seems to see the defeat rather lightly: “Well, we just won’t go 18-0 in the league,” they say, congratulating Misfits Gaming.
The German coach of G2 Esports, Fabian “Grabbz” Lohmann, shared a picture of himself looking quite distressed.
This is what it’s about: The beautiful thing here is that the match is not seen with resentment. Ultimately, it was “just” a league match, the loss has no major consequences as long as the next games are won.
In the LoL Worlds 2019, players were criticized harshly for poor performances.
Caps is such an outstanding player that fans forgive him a game where everything goes against him and tend to view it with a smile rather than criticize harshly: The 20-year-old and his team seem to gain more popularity from such matches than they lose.
Caps is, after all, a trained mid laner and has only been playing in the bot lane for a few matches. Should Caps prove to be a weakness for G2 Esports, G2 Esports has the option to simply switch back.
