MeinMMO editor Benedict Grothaus has been raving about Against the Storm for years, a roguelite building game on Steam. It has been getting better since its early access. It is now on sale.
What kind of game is this?
- In Against the Storm, you continuously build a settlement and must gain the favor of the queen. The catch: recurring storms make it increasingly difficult to survive.
- You explore forests and clearings, face dangers and disasters while also meeting the needs of your citizens; otherwise, the village will perish.
- The further you go, the higher the rewards and you can unlock various bonuses, new buildings, and effects. The game itself becomes increasingly challenging if you want it to.
What makes Against the Storm so good: Every round in the game is different. Each time you start a new map or a new village, you have different requirements. Different species accompany you, or you receive other blueprints.
Because of this, you must adapt every time; there are no “cookie cutter” builds. Foxes have different needs than humans or beavers but also different abilities – and accordingly, the village should look different.
It is this very variety that has led MeinMMO editor Gerd Schuhmann to invest 50 hours in Against the Storm in just 4 days.
By the end of 2024, Against the Storm will have received its first DLC with a new race: frogs. Both the base game and the DLC are currently on sale on Steam:
- Against the Storm is 50% off and costs 14.99 instead of 29.99 Euros on Steam.
- Keepers of the Stone is 35% off and costs 9.74 instead of 14.99 Euros on Steam.
- In the bundle, you get the game with DLC and supporter pack for a total of 27.47 Euros.
“An outstanding building game that keeps you motivated throughout”
On Steam, Against the Storm has a rating between 92 and 95% and is thus very to extremely positive. Players praise the variety in the game, which keeps it from ever becoming boring, as well as the ability to unlock new content while playing. A user with over 670 hours in the game writes:
Super relaxing to play, yet captivating due to the meta-game (the seals). I think a game has never held me for so long.
Gruphy on Steam
For me as a survival and strategy fan, Against the Storm is the absolute comfort game that I always return to. Despite the challenging difficulty, the relatively short rounds have a cathartic feel that tempt you to play just one more round.
However, what you won’t find in Against the Storm are fights. All problems are solved without weapons and mostly through economic means. If you feel like something more strategic, you can find a wide selection on our list: The 15 best strategy games for PC
