During Prime Deal Day, there is a top-notch Anime available for a relatively low price. Our anime demon Cortyn reveals why you should get Code Geass.
Anime fans have it relatively hard in Europe, and especially in Germany. While there is a plethora of streaming providers with current series, older works often leave you with the choice of buying the entire series on DVD or BluRay – and that can get quite expensive. Depending on the series, you can easily fork out three-digit amounts.
That’s a pity, as some masterpieces from the last decades might never be experienced in solid quality. Now, during the “Amazon Prime Deal Days”, many series are available at a reduced price. Among them is Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.
What is Code Geass about? Code Geass takes place in an alternative version of our world. In 2010, the Holy Britannian Empire declared war and directly subjected several states – including Japan. From then on, the country is referred to as “Colonial 11”, and the Japanese are only called “Elevens”, forced to live in ghettos – even losing their basic rights.
However, some resistance groups rise up against the occupiers, including the young student Lelouch Lamperouge, who acquires a very special power through an accident: The power of kings. This ability allows him to give a single command to anyone who looks him in the eye, which must be executed without question.
From the underground, Lelouch tries to pit the various factions against each other while simultaneously maintaining the facade of an elite student and wanting to protect his sister from the war.
What does Code Geass cost? Currently, during the “Amazon Prime Deal Days”, the two complete packages are available for €47.97 (Season 1) and €46.97 (Season 2) – each reduced by 31% and 33%, respectively. The entire work consists of 50 episodes and has a runtime of over 20 hours.
- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion – Season 1 – Complete Edition
- Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 – Season 2 – Complete Edition
Thus, the series currently costs just under €2 per episode – compared to many (often significantly worse) series, a truly solid price and almost a must-buy for fans of the story.
Why is Code Geass worth watching? Anime often tends to feel very formulaic and predictable or simply overloaded. However, Code Geass manages to combine a variety of different genres in a way that harmonizes beautifully within the presented story.
No matter whether you are into political intrigue, character destinies with plenty of drama, exciting mech battles, military tactics, or just a few “cute waifus” – Code Geass has all of that in abundance, and yet it never feels “too much”. Exciting battles and calmer character moments alternate constantly.
Furthermore, the story spans several years, allowing you to truly witness the impact of the protagonists’ and antagonists’ actions.
Code Geass also has one of the best and most well-thought-out endings of all series – although I don’t want to spoil that here.
Whoever is looking for a really great anime that will entertain you over a (very, very) long weekend and that you enjoy revisiting every few years, is well advised with Code Geass.
