What kind of game is Monster Hunter Rise? The gameplay principle is quickly explained: You create your character and two animal companions. One is a Palico, a cat-like creature that supports you in battle, and the other is a Palamute, a dog that you can ride.
Together, you embark on the titular monster hunt by capturing them or smashing them with one of the 14 oversized weapons. With the parts harvested from the monster, you return to the blacksmith. He forges new and better weapons and armor for you, so you can hunt larger and stronger monsters.
Among critics, Monster Hunter Rise is a highly praised game, with an average of 87 out of 100 points from the international trade press. Both gameplay-wise and technically, the title is very convincing. The only criticism was the included story, which was noticeably weak. More on that later.

Why is Monster Hunter Rise a good entry point? With Monster Hunter Rise, the entry for new players is now significantly easier, as most battles against the monsters at the beginning of the game are much simpler than in previous installments. This allows new hunters to familiarize themselves with the various weapons and mechanics without becoming frustrated quickly. Unfortunately, experienced players might find themselves underwhelmed at the beginning of the game.
Strong improvements since the release
What was the game like at release? When Monster Hunter Rise was released for the Switch two years ago, there were some criticisms. Firstly, the story was very weak. Although it has never really been important or outstanding in any of the series’ installments, here it was so weak that it stood out negatively. Another point of criticism was the lack of different monsters in the endgame. Very quickly, you faced the same monsters over and over again, with no prospect of variety.
How is the game doing now? All these problems have since been addressed by developer Capcom. The story now has a satisfactory ending, and the catalog of monsters has been supplemented by nine more. This improved version is available immediately to buyers of the PS5 and Xbox versions.
