The new patch for Baldur’s Gate 3 is live – at least for some. Due to a bug, Patch 8 started on PS5 already.
For players on PlayStation 5, it happened a bit faster than expected. Many were able to download the major Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 last night, on January 27, 2025. And this, even though the patch hadn’t been tested yet.
What’s happening with Baldur’s Gate 3? Patch 8 of Baldur’s Gate 3 was supposed to undergo a long testing phase, but that seems to have – somehow – been spontaneously shortened. Because the first players can already play the new patch. Larian stated on X:
No, the stress test for Patch 8 has not yet started.
Yes, PS5 players currently have access to Patch 8. […]
And how is your Monday going?
The last sentence makes it clear: This was not planned at all, and actually, no one should have had access to the new patch yet.
Who could download the patch? So far, it seems to mainly affect people with a PlayStation 5. Some have reported that they have the new patch even though they did not explicitly sign up for the new update.
How could this happen? Larian is currently investigating this. However, since only PS5 fans are affected, it is at least reasonable to think that this is a mistake by Sony. Updates on consoles go through the console operators, so there may have been an error here.
What is Larian warning about? The developers point out that players should handle their save files with caution. Because all save files created in Patch 8 are no longer compatible with Patch 7. So if you have downloaded the patch, saved your game, and in the coming days the patch is retracted, you could lose access to those save files. If you save, you should create entirely new save files to avoid problems.
This is how the community is reacting: In the Subreddit of Baldur’s Gate 3, there is much discussion about the incident. Especially because the patch version apparently comes with some major bugs.
- “The translation of the tweet: Someone at PlayStation made the patch live, and now we have to figure out how to fix it. Today is a nightmare.” – Verittan
- “Man, I can feel the frustration and confusion from the post, haha! I hope they figure out what happened and have a better week.” – Winterberry_Biscuits
- “The patch definitely broke some things, and that really sucks. I have to wait until it gets fixed …
I can play, but the group list on the left side is just gone, lol” – verified-dreams
So the best seems to be just to wait until Larian and Sony fix the problem, and hopefully, everyone is back on the right version of Baldur’s Gate 3 – which would be Patch 7. In that, you can also experience the heroic deeds of Scratch – because he can even negotiate with demons.
