Players are currently waiting eagerly for hardly any MMORPG as much as for Chrono Odyssey, which is set to launch in 2025. A gaming magazine was allowed to try out the game itself, but provides a rather disappointing first impression.
Where does this impression come from? Kakao Games, the publisher of Chrono Odyssey, gave the English gaming website Massively Overpowered a first look at the new MMORPG. A journalist was also allowed to get hands-on and test the game.
The first impression from this event, however, is not a very good one. The game seems more like an imitation of New World – and a worse one at that.
By the way, you can see a trailer for Chrono Odyssey here:
Many similarities, but even less polish
What similarities exist to New World? This list is long, so here are the most important similarities summarized:
- Each of the 6 classes in Chrono Odyssey has access to 3 exclusive weapon types. From these, you can equip two at the same time to switch between them in combat – like in New World, it’s about finding the right weapon for the situation, not about maximizing damage.
- As in New World, each weapon has its own skill tree that you level up by killing enemies with that weapon. Unlike the template, you probably unlock a few more active abilities here.
- Enemies in the open world are quite dangerous and you need to actively dodge or block (if the weapon allows), just like in the old days of New World. The management of healing potions and stamina also plays an important role in combat.
- Even crafting shows noticeable inspiration. Almost everything in the game world can be collected, and even the interaction icon looks almost identical to that in New World.
“It’s hard not to conclude that Chrono Odyssey was developed as a direct competitor to New World,” writes Massively Overpowered. However, it seems significantly less refined than New World, leaving little reason to choose this game over its predecessor.
For example, the animations in Chrono Odyssey are not necessarily bad, but rather remind one of older action MMORPGs like Neverwinter. The MMORPG – at least in its current state – simply does not reach the animation quality of New World.
The potential of the “Chronotector” – an artifact that can manipulate time – is also not fully utilized yet. Here, you mainly unlock standard abilities like an AoE stun or the ability to slide down heights.
The big question now is how much of this will be polished by the release. The version that the magazine played was an unfinished build, yes – but the game is also set to be released in 2025. When exactly is still unclear.
Whether Chrono Odyssey can live up to the high expectations remains to be seen – at least by the time of release.
