With Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has released a revised version of the old Oblivion from 2006. However, the game suffers from the typical problems that every game using the Unreal Engine faces: Performance issues. And these problems do not spare players using high-end hardware.
What are the problems? Bethesda relies on Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) for Oblivion Remastered, like many newer games. While it looks very nice and offers many additional graphical effects, it also has a significant drawback: performance. There has been criticism of Unreal Engine 5 for a long time.
Stuttering, low FPS, and crashes ruin the remaster for players
Currently (April 23, 2025, at 8:30 AM), there are still 83% positive reviews on Steam with around 7,800 ratings, and the majority of those criticizing the game are players complaining about performance. German players are also complaining about the lack of German voiceover.
The problems become particularly clear as soon as you leave the small starting dungeon and the sewers in the game: then the game struggles with severe frame drops and micro stutters. The frame rate remains stable in the latter case, but the game stutters briefly and visibly. In various reviews, users write:
- “Looks incredible and has everything you could wish for from an Oblivion remaster.
Unfortunately, it runs like trash. Far exceeding the recommended specifications, but constantly dropping to 20 – 30 FPS in cities and outdoors on medium settings without ray tracing. I will wait for
optimization.” - “I have a 4060TI and I’m getting 10 FPS outdoors on the lowest settings. This urgently needs to be patched for optimization. It is practically unplayable for me at the moment. It runs worse than STALKER 2.”
- “7900XT 50fps FSR Balanced, 25fps Native. Strong ghosting, dithering [reduced color depth], flickering lumen, traversal stutter, and the usual UE5 problems.”
In the Steam community, there are numerous discussions about the problems, one of the largest discussions on Steam has about 130 comments now. A second discussion on Steam has now reached just over 100 comments. Some are complaining that even with an RTX 4090, one of the best graphics cards on the market, the game cannot be played smoothly because the micro stutters ruin all the fun.
However, there are also users who explain that the game runs smoothly and without problems for them.
And some users tease: Look at the system requirements before buying, before you complain about the game. Oblivion Remastered requires at least a Radeon RX 5700 or a GeForce 1070 Ti. A Radeon RX 6800XT or RTX 2080 is recommended.
What happens next? So far, the development team has not commented on the problems, but the mentioned issues are present in almost every Unreal Engine 5 game. However, there will likely be an update sooner or later to address the frequent crashes that some users have reported.
Another game has also received an update on Steam. However, this is less about improved graphics and more about new and improved gameplay features. And many players are impressed by the improvements. More about this directly on MeinMMO: A soulslike on Steam had less than 500 players, now there are suddenly over 11,000 – And all thanks to an update
