The graphics card madness continues. Chinese authorities have now secured a large quantity of Nvidia graphics cards after engaging in a chase with smugglers.
What happened? The trade in graphics cards is currently extremely profitable. Many are out of stock, prices have been high for months. Apparently, it has become so lucrative that criminal gangs are focusing on trading GPUs.
In Hong Kong, a chase at sea occurred due to 300 graphics cards. Authorities chased the smugglers with speedboats and later presented the seized loot. As TVB News explains (via YouTube.com), the seized items belonged to a smuggling ring.
The smugglers were spotted near the airport
This mistake was made by the smugglers: As Kotaku reports (via Kotaku.com), Chinese authorities spotted a fishing boat near “Hong Kong International” airport. The smugglers were transferring crates from this fishing boat to a speedboat at 2:00 AM. When their cover was blown, the men onboard the speedboat sped towards the mainland.
A high-speed chase ensued, as Tom’s Hardware reports (via tomshardware.com). Although the group managed to escape, the police tracked down the owner of the fishing boat. This allowed them to seize some crates.
What was smuggled: The seized goods included typical exotic foods, such as sea cucumbers and shark fins, as well as technical products like smartphones, computer gadgets, and RAM. Surprisingly, the crates contained approximately 300 unidentified graphics cards. According to the police report, the value of the technical products amounts to 2 million HKD (approximately 216,000 €).

Neither stickers nor model names are present on the graphics cards. However, as Tom’s Hardware reports, these are supposed to be CMP graphics cards from Nvidia. Apparently, these are the “CMP 30 HX” cards, which are reportedly being traded at prices of around 600 € each.
These graphics cards are typically used for crypto-mining. As Kotaku notes, however, the “CMP 30 HX” cards are not particularly effective in this area. The fact that they are still being smuggled shows how high the demand for graphics cards currently is.
Another major blow in China
What else happened? At the end of March, Chinese authorities conducted another significant operation that made waves in the gaming community. They arrested what is believed to be the world’s largest cheat provider. The provider sold cheats on 17 websites.
