One user bought a new graphics card and had to choose between AMD and Nvidia. After much back and forth, he decided on a 7900 GRE from AMD. According to him, he does not regret the decision to this day.
The alternative would have been an RTX 4070 Ti Super with similar performance, but he would have had to pay 200 US dollars more for that, which he claims he simply could not justify.
After three months: Regret nothing
The user explains about his purchase and the decision for the RX 7900 GRE:
I had the 4070 Ti Super in my cart twice. In every test, it says it’s the safer choice, better drivers, DLSS is great, blah blah. But at my local Microcenter, the 7900 GRE cost about 380 US dollars compared to 580 US dollars, and I simply could not justify that. The money I saved at Stake, I set aside for a better power supply and an NVMe, which I wanted to save on anyway.
After three months, I do not regret it at all in terms of performance. In Cyberpunk with maximum settings and 1440p, I reach about 78 FPS without Path Tracing, which is more than enough for me. The games I actually play the most run perfectly.
Everything, according to the user, is not perfect. There are mainly minor issues, but they are limited to two games: Forza Horizon 5 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024. However, he managed to resolve those issues.
When it comes to pure raw performance (rasterization), AMD can easily compete with the comparable card from Nvidia.
AMD struggles with prejudice about poor software
What’s behind the accusations? Anyone looking to buy a graphics card and deciding between AMD and Nvidia will stumble over a prevailing prejudice:
The drivers and software from AMD are said to be so poor that the hardware is hardly usable. This discussion is also recurring on MeinMMO, where users claim that AMD has technical issues.
