Out of nowhere: On World UFO Day, Ubisoft has now teased the once highly anticipated and now almost forgotten open-world action-adventure Beyond Good & Evil 2. Additionally, there was a new job posting for the game. The project is apparently not dead yet.
What is the current status of Beyond Good & Evil 2? Since 2007, the sequel to the cult classic Beyond Good & Evil has been in the works. At the E3 2017 gaming fair, there was the first trailer. In 2018, more gameplay and new information followed – for example about the combat system or coop multiplayer. And the new impressions made the hearts of fans and many interested players race. But in 2019, there were only concept drawings and a few seconds of gameplay, and after that, it was basically quiet about the game – until today.
Many would have wished for a sign of life long ago, but nothing came, and the interest in the game noticeably declined on Reddit, in the trade press, or on social media. Some assumed that the project is now dead. Particularly the departure of Creative Director Michel Ancel, who designed the Rayman series and Beyond Good & Evil, intensified speculation about a possible cancellation of the title. There was also no information about the game at E3 2021 (and 2020).
However, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has repeatedly appeared in Ubisoft’s list of planned games, so it has never really been declared dead. And now, there has finally been a tangible, official sign of life.
Beyond Good & Evil 2 – Teaser for UFO Day
This is what the sign of life looks like: On World UFO Day, July 2, several official Twitter accounts of Ubisoft posted small teasers for the game.
The account of Ubisoft Belgium shows a spaceship from Beyond Good & Evil 2 over the city of Ghent:
The Dutch account shows the same spaceship over the canals of Amsterdam:
Fans interpret this as a clear sign that the game is still alive and being developed. After all, it is unlikely that the company would intentionally tease something it actually wants to discontinue or has already done.
This also supports the idea that Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still alive: Another sign of life is shown by a new job posting that was recently made by Ubisoft Montpellier, almost parallel to the tweets. They are looking for a Community Developer for 2 games on the LinkedIn platform, to manage community strategies for the two games – explicitly for Beyond Good & Evil 2 and for an unknown project.
You can clearly notice this now: With the teasers and the job posting, it is apparent that interest in the game has waned – especially compared to the years 2017 and 2018. Both tweets together have to date received less than 100 likes and have hardly been retweeted. The topic is also discussed less compared to previous years – even though almost everyone participating in the discussions is very pleased with the signs of life. But it seems that more than just 2 small spaceship tweets are needed to revive players’ and fans’ interest in the title.
How long do we still have to wait for Beyond Good & Evil 2? That is still unknown. The tweets only show: the game is not dead, it still plays a role in Ubisoft’s plans, and work is still being done on it. However, it is likely to be a long time before the release comes within reach. Because according to rumors, the game is still stuck in a very early stage of development.
