The MMORPG Odin: Valhalla Rising (PC, Mobile) presents itself in a new gameplay trailer. However, curiously, it lacks any co-players.
What kind of game is Odin? The new MMORPG transports you to a world of Norse mythology. You’ll encounter figures like Odin or Thor and travel to places such as Midgard, Jötunheim, Nidawellir, and Albenheim, featuring various biomes like snowy landscapes, deep forests, mountains, cities, and expansive meadows.
There, you’ll face monsters like giants or dragons and have to fight them. You can access hard-to-reach places by climbing, flying on dragons, pegasi, or giant moths, and traveling by ship.
What can be seen in the trailer? The new trailer showcases some of the locations you’ll visit in the MMORPG, including the forests of Albenheim and the dwarven kingdom of Nidawellir.
The hero wanders through these areas, rides, flies, or climbs. He visits towns, meets NPCs, and rushes past monsters on horseback.
All of this looks impressive and beautiful thanks to Unreal Engine 4. The lighting effects create a cohesive atmosphere. The locations appear detailed and full of life.
This is how good the trailer for Odin looks:
An MMORPG without other players?
What is strange about the trailer? The video shows gameplay from the MMORPG Odin, yet besides the hero, no other players can be seen, not even in the city. The character is completely alone in the vast area – aside from NPCs or monsters.
This seems somewhat odd when a developer wants to present a new MMORPG. Players want to see how groups interact or what happens in the towns when multiple players meet and trade. That’s what makes an MMORPG.
Why might there be no players visible? The video mainly revolves around showcasing the locations, landscapes, and graphics of Odin: Valhalla Rising. This works better when not many co-players are present in one area. If only one character is visible, the focus can be placed more on the landscapes and visuals.
However, the developers still emphasize that it is an MMORPG. The sudden shift to a single-player RPG with optional multiplayer like in Crimson Desert is therefore unlikely.
Not showing other players probably had aesthetic reasons.
When will the game be released? Odin: Valhalla Rising is set to be released in 2021 in South Korea and Taiwan for PC and smartphones. It is planned to be released internationally “shortly thereafter.” However, an exact date has not yet been announced.
