Season 1 of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is approaching and players are comparing the first season roadmaps of recent years. Some fear a subpar support for the multiplayer of the latest CoD – especially Warzone 2 is seen as a scapegoat.
The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was incredibly successful. It managed to attract 40% more players than any previous premium release.
However, important content was missing at launch:
- No Hardcore mode
- No access to personal statistics
- Hardly any opportunities to unlock anything aside from weapon skins
For some players, CoD MW2 is considered more of a beta after release. However, this is not the case for the multiplayer itself, but for the new battle royale Call of Duty: Warzone 2.
Many of the missing standard features at launch are being added to the game with Season 1. You can find an overview of the season content here.
However, there are thousands of players who continue to have concerns about the multiplayer after the roadmap reveal – because they are comparing the respective Season 1 of the last years.
In the subreddit of the new Modern Warfare 2, a thread on the topic has gathered over 2,000 upvotes and more than 750 comments.
Discussions arise about how particularly “battle royale” games contribute to the decline of multiplayer shooters. The most popular comment in the thread has gathered 1,400 upvotes: “The success of Warzone and battle royale in general is a disaster for classic multiplayer shooters.”
Another very popular comment with 1,100 upvotes also hits the mark: “Multiplayer today = leveling Warzone weapons in Shoot the Ship.” This refers to a playlist consisting of the smaller maps Shipment and Shoot House. Here you can find fast action for many experience points.
What’s the deal with the roadmap comparison? The thread on Reddit (via reddit.com) compares the announced multiplayer content of the respective first season of the last 4 years.
It is noticeable: While CoD MW 2019 and Black Ops Cold War offer solid map content, Vanguard (2021) and the new Modern Warfare 2 are different:
- CoD MW 2019: 7 Maps
- Cold War: 7 Maps
- Vanguard: 2 Maps
- CoD MW2: 2 Maps
- Not always 6vs6 maps
Especially the comparison with Vanguard now fuels the fear that MW2 will receive less support than some players wish.
From this perspective, MW2 even offers less “new” content than Vanguard – as Vanguard had a completely new map in Season 1, while MW2 now comes with two maps that players have known for years – Shipment and Shoot House. There are therefore no new maps.
However, the discussion completely overlooks that all predecessor titles in the list ended their lifecycle with at least 25 6vs6 maps, thus containing a similar number of the so-called “core maps”:
- CoD MW 2019: 25 Maps
- Cold War: 28 Maps
- Vanguard: 27 Maps
- 6vs6 maps at the end of the lifecycle
