No Man’s Sky is now facing an investigation by an advertising standards authority.
According to Eurogamer, the Advertising Standards Authority, a UK advertising industry watchdog, has launched an investigation into No Man’s Sky after several complaints regarding the game’s advertising were made.
The ASA can withdraw advertisements. If an advertiser opposes an ASA ruling and ignores it, serious sanctions may follow. For instance, search engines may stop displaying the paid advertisements.
The ASA is not commenting on the investigation as it is still ongoing. However, it seems to revolve around the game’s Steam page, which includes some items that some people find misleading.
It concerns screenshots and videos that show a large-scale battle, advanced animal behavior, and ship flying attributes that did not make it into the launch version of the game.
If the ASA rules against No Man’s Sky, it could have implications not only for the Steam presence but also for the PlayStation Store. It could be removed from there.
