No Man’s Sky is just around the corner. Many are already rubbing their hands in anticipation, but what can you actually do in the game?
No Man’s Sky is a sandbox. This means: Do what you feel like. At the beginning, the game is still somewhat linear as you first need to repair your ship and escape from the first planet. Additionally, you need a hyperdrive to explore other locations in the galaxy. But basically, it’s up to you how you proceed and where you want to travel.
Resources and Crafting
In the beginning, you set out to explore the surroundings of the foreign planet and mine resources with your multi-tool. You will do this quite often in the game, as you explore multiple star systems and constantly need resources, for example, to repair your spaceship or to craft fuel. Furthermore, rare and valuable resources earn you a lot of money and help you perform upgrades. Exploring planets and mining resources is, therefore, an element that will accompany you throughout the game.
Crafting continues to play an important role. As you mine resources, they are added to your inventory. Crafting takes place in the inventory. You select a space where it shows you what you can craft and which resources you need for it. Once you have everything together, you craft the item, such as a warp cell, and it appears in your inventory. Some of the crafting recipes you already know from the beginning, while others you have to find first.
Space Flights and Combat
On the planets, you can also fight, although this is not always advisable – especially not at the beginning. When you mine resources, Sentinels will appear. The flying robots will scan you. If you attack them, they will call for reinforcements and you will become embroiled in battles. This also happens when you attack animals to obtain rare resources. The combat occurs like in a shooter. Depending on how effective your weapon is, you deal more or less damage.
Once you get into your ship, you can explore space and fly to other planets. With your ship’s lasers, you also mine resources in space by firing the weapons at asteroids. However, there can also be battles with NPC ships. So, you should constantly improve your weapon systems and the armor of your ship through crafting.
Trade and Scanning
At space stations, it is possible to land and trade at the marketplace or with docked ships. For example, you sell valuable resources that you do not necessarily need and buy other important items that you might not be able to craft yourself at the moment. Not all ships and stations trade the same items, just as there are not all resources on every planet.
Scanning is always important. Because this way, you find out what resources are available in a solar system or on a planet. When you land on an unknown world, you can even give animals their own names when you scan them.
