At release in August of last year, the space online game No Man’s Sky faced much criticism. However, it seems that the tide is turning.
No Man’s Sky did not meet the high expectations of fans at launch. Many had envisioned something different, a kind of MMO where players could meet each other and embark on adventures together.
In addition, there was a repetitive gameplay structure where players often performed similar tasks, such as constantly collecting resources on rather dull planets. An exciting story leading through the galaxy was also missing. The criticism was harsh and sometimes even devastating.
No Man’s Sky on the rise
However, the developer studio Hello Games did not give up and affirmed to the players that they would deliver the game that was originally promised through updates. It seems that the developers are slowly but surely implementing this. Looking at the Steam numbers, Steam Charts showed that at launch in August, there were more than 36,000 players active at the same time. When the disillusionment set in, this number had already dropped to around 2,980 players just a month later. From then on, there was a downward trend, with only about 500 players remaining in February of this year.
But now the trend is back on the rise. The number of average daily active players has since doubled. The mood of the fans has also changed. On Reddit, the place where No Man’s Sky was heavily criticized, players are now posting screenshots of their home planets. The newly introduced photo feature allows for easy picture taking.
Even the construction of personal bases, which was introduced with the Foundation update, is well received. The latest, larger update titled Path Finder is very well received. This allows players to explore their home worlds with a vehicle.
Can the game eventually impress?
With a recently released smaller patch, the possibility of exploring other planets with the vehicle has now been introduced. All the small and large updates seem to have turned the mood around and are encouraging players to give No Man’s Sky another chance.
What do you think? Has No Man’s Sky improved with all the updates? Could the game still become the title everyone hoped for, and do you give No Man’s Sky a second chance?
