No Man’s Sky on Steam becomes a horror game for a short time, with flying squids from another dimension chasing you

For the expedition The Cursed, the developers of No Man’s Sky have been heavily inspired by the Cthulhu mythos, at least visually. The event comes with new enemies, survival mechanics, and a creepy mask.

What is it about? No Man’s Sky is an open-world survival game set in a procedurally generated science fiction universe. With the new expedition The Cursed, a limited-time event has been released that focuses more on the creepy aspects of the game.

Unknown Dimensions and Dangerous Anomalies

What can you expect from the event? The Cursed sends you into a world where two realities overlap. As a result of this instability, ghostly anomalies appear. They look like a mix between a jellyfish and an octopus, and the shown monsters remind us with their tentacles of Cthulhu, the cosmic horror of the writer H. P. Lovecraft.

During this expedition, you cannot warp between star systems; instead, you must rely on an ancient network of portals for fast travel. Occasionally, you will hear mysterious voices from another dimension that want to help you – or maybe not.

In The Cursed, you do not fight against the elements as in the main game, but against the boundaries of reality itself. For this, your exosuit is equipped with an anomaly suppressor. When its energy runs low, anomalies near you become unpredictable and might even attack you.

Among the new items you can unlock during the expedition are a mask that allows you to become a cosmic horror yourself (at least in appearance) and a new spaceship that resembles the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars.

How long does the event last? The Cursed started on October 23, 2024, and is set to run for the next two weeks. So it would officially end on November 6.

In The Cursed, things are significantly less peaceful than in the last update. With Aquarius, there were some nice new features both above and below the water surface that players had been waiting for a long time.
