Some video games are so extraordinary that they even get featured in TV shows that have little to do with games. In Stephen Colbert’s late-night show, for instance, the upcoming space game No Man’s Sky was shown.
No Man’s Sky is an indie MMO that has gained attention due to its size and possibilities. Players assume the role of a spaceship pilot and can explore an entire universe. This universe is said to be so vast that it would take five billion years in real time to explore every single solar system. Therefore, one will never see the entirety of the game universe. The ability to land on any planet and explore it on foot is also something that excites gamers.

In Stephen Colbert’s late-night show, Sean Murray from Hello Games showcased the MMO and guided through a new solar system. Stephen Colbert could not resist naming it the Colbert system and also gave names to the creatures wandering on a planet. These include Colbison, Molebear, Stephenus Rex, Codbert, and Colbertasaurus. Using a device that looks like a gun, one can assign a name to each unnamed creature, which other players will then see if they happen to land on that planet. For this naming process, players receive in-game currency.
Sean Murray also explained that at Hello Games they had to create a new periodic table where “Oxycen” appears instead of “Oxygen,” though the reason for this was not given. Additionally, spaceships will heat up when entering a planet’s atmosphere. It will also be possible to dive underwater.
No Man’s Sky is played from a first-person perspective, and players will never see their avatar. Only other players can see what you look like. However, due to the vastness of the game universe, it is very rare to encounter other players. No Man’s Sky will be released for both PlayStation 4 and PC. So far, a release date has not been announced.
