Information about the crafting system and resource management can be found in No Man’s Sky.
Without resources, you won’t get far in the upcoming space simulation No Man’s Sky. In an almost limitless, procedurally generated galaxy, you need enough supplies and decent equipment to avoid failing hopelessly right at the start of your journey.
So far, little was known about the resources, except that the elements are based in part on our periodic table, but also can be purely fictional. Now, further information has been released.
Crafting and Resource System in No Man’s Sky
In an interview with IGN, the founder of Hello Games Sean Murray discusses the essentials of the crafting system in No Man’s Sky and explains why you should always look for resources.
According to Murray, there are three important things you can upgrade: your ship, your weapon, and your spacesuit. Each of these three objects has its own unique inventory. There are various inventory slots: upgrade slots and item slots.
The player must make significant choices about whether to focus more on upgrades for their ship to add numerous functions or to build a large storage. Here, you will need to find a balance to store all the important resources while also being sufficiently equipped to survive in the galaxy.
On your exploration, you will find various ways to acquire crafting materials and resources, whether by exploring previously undiscovered planets, fighting wild creatures, raiding foreign trading ships, or destroying asteroids in space.
For example, you will need plutonium, which will serve as a source of fuel. You need fuel not only for your ship but also for weapons and certain shields of your spacesuit. In No Man’s Sky, nothing recharges automatically; you need to ensure that you have a supply. Here, the survival aspect of the game is heavily emphasized.
In the interview, Murray did not go into detail about how players can find the needed items in this vast galaxy. But No Man’s Sky also operates according to certain rules that players will discover, which will help them in their quest for a specific resource. Although all planets are uniquely generated, they still follow certain scientific principles.
As Murray states, temperature, vegetation, and indeed the resources depend in part on how far a given planet is from the nearest sun. But the task lies solely with the players to discover, understand, and thus quickly access the desired resources in the galaxy of No Man’s Sky.
