The space open-world game No Man’s Sky surprised with a larger update on February 19. While it brought really cool content, players would have preferred something entirely different.
What kind of update was it? The patch 2.3 is named “Living Ship” and that’s exactly what it is about. You will receive new spaceships that are made of living beings.
It starts with a story quest, and then it’s about hatching and raising your biological ship. There are supposed to be various forms and life forms. The technology in the living ship is also supposed to differ from classic spaceships and should not only consist of pure material grind.
The Living Ships sound cool and many players are excited about the new and somewhat surprising player expansion, especially since it is also useful for single players. But actually, they would have liked something else.
What is the problem? In No Man’s Sky, it is primarily about discovering and exploring worlds. Spaceships are necessary for this, but they do not bring new planets, flora, and fauna.
Many players on reddit therefore express a desire for new content to explore and hope that the developers of Hello Games take this into account.
The desire for new worlds is great
What do the players say? In the reddit thread about the patch notes, many praise the update, but the desire for new worlds is much greater. The current top comment from user Njagos states:
The ships look cool, but I’m more interested in space encounters and objects. Everything that makes exploration more fun.
I will only revisit the game when there’s a revamp of exploration and terrain […].
Perhaps they have a team working on a massive update for exploration/fauna/terrain/planets and another team that works on these small updates like this one.
This comment receives a lot of support, and other users also express the wish for new content to explore:
- Ezi091: “Now all that’s missing is a good update for planet variation and exploration, and this game would be perfect. Seeing the same plants and animals since the release is not fun in an exploration game.”
- Rainbowlemon: “I feel like they are not reading player comments. The additional space exploration is cool, but it isn’t diverse enough to bring me back.”
- Consistent_Bar: “The update looks good, but once again, they clearly ignore the biggest wish of the community, which is greater diversity among planets.”
The big Beyond update already struggled: The big update 2.0 titled Beyond was released in August 2019. While it brought many new features like:
- Online features
- Virtual Reality
- taming and riding animals
- various “Quality of Life” adjustments,
but no truly new content to explore on the side. Even the small follow-up updates are currently awaited.
Trade Ships and Talking NPCs
What else did the latest update bring? Besides the living spaceships, update 2.3 included some small and useful changes:
- There are now trade ships in space that you can encounter, help, and trade with
- Inventory management has been simplified
- There is a better group system for multiplayer content
- NPCs can greet you via the communicator in the middle of space
- There were a lot of bug fixes and optimizations

If there isn’t enough to do in No Man’s Sky, players usually get creative, just like this one:
