Yesterday, Bethesda Softworks announced a new game from the Fallout series. However, it is not Fallout Online.
Interplay wanted to develop an MMORPG based on Fallout some time ago, but Bethesda Softworks thwarted those plans. Many fans hoped that the reason was that Bethesda itself wanted to release a Fallout Online. It was revealed yesterday what the developer studio is working on: It is Fallout 4. A new single-player installment in the series.
No MMORPG in the Apocalypse
It was actually to be expected. With another MMORPG, Bethesda would only be competing with itself against The Elder Scrolls Online and splitting the player base. Therefore, only a single-player RPG made sense. A new The Elder Scrolls game was also rather unlikely, as this series is currently focused on TESO. Nevertheless, a Fallout Online would have had potential. An MMORPG with an apocalyptic scenario would be something different from the fantasy mainstream. And the background of Fallout is not just standard post-apocalypse. The black humor and the setting based on 1950s futurism is quite special.
Anyone who has played Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas often wished to explore the ruined cities and radioactively contaminated deserts with some friends. Whether Fallout 4 will have a multiplayer mode is currently still unknown. It would definitely be an interesting feature. It doesn’t have to take on MMO proportions, but could be limited to cooperative adventures in small groups. On June 15th at 4 AM CEST, Bethesda plans to reveal more about Fallout 4. Perhaps they will surprise us with a multiplayer mode.
If you are now disappointed and wish to play a post-apocalyptic MMORPG, you will have to turn to games like Xyson or Fallen Earth, or wait for the online game Crossout by Gaijin Entertainment, which, however, is more in line with World of Tanks.
