It looks like Destiny 2 Shadowkeep is, as announced, discontinuing the popular auto-reload mechanic. The auto-reload will likely no longer exist in its current form. We have the details and will show you what exactly will change starting in October.
What is the auto-reload all about? In Destiny 2, it is currently possible to fire continuously for a period of time with the help of exotic armor pieces and certain class abilities.
The reloading time is eliminated during this period. All weapons will then be automatically reloaded as long as you are in the effect area. This is why it is called auto-reload.
What is so special about the auto-reload? The automatic reloading with the help of exotics and/or abilities is currently an absolute must-have in every challenging PvE activity. Anyone looking to maximize their damage output or that of their team cannot afford to ignore this mechanic.
That’s why Warlocks with their well are coupled with the Lunafaction Boots or Titans with their barricade are essential parts of a raid team and are also welcome allies in all other endgame activities.
This is how the mechanic will change with Shadowkeep: Already in his first “Director’s Cut” blog post, franchise director Luke Smith announced that the auto-reload could be nerfed in the future.
In the playable Destiny 2 build at the PAX West gaming convention, the certainty has now emerged: This mechanic will be altered with Shadowkeep. Many convention visitors have already noticed this.

Specifically, it concerns nerfs or changes to the Titan’s barricade as well as the Warlock’s exotic Lunafaction Boots. Instead of the auto-reload, the ability and the armor exotic at the convention only offer an “increased reload speed”. Weapons will no longer be automatically reloaded in the effect area.
By the way: The status of the exotic Titan chest piece Actium War Rig, which continually reloads part of the magazine of the equipped auto rifle from reserves, is still unknown. If this is also changed accordingly, then the auto-reload mechanic would completely disappear from Destiny 2 with Shadowkeep.

What does this mean for the Guardians? Since its inception, the auto-reload mechanic has always been an essential part of almost all challenging PvE activities and boss fights. Some classes, including certain abilities and exotics, were essentially mandatory.
With Shadowkeep, this change is likely to alter the meta, and the effective build variety is also expected to increase.
Warlocks will no longer be limited to the well but can also utilize other builds. Titans can once again take on an important support role with their empowered weapons of light. And launchers like the Peak may not be as effective as they are now – even if they themselves may remain unaffected by nerfs.
It’s also possible that other weapons like the Sniper Whisper of the Worm could play a bigger role. It will definitely be interesting to see which weapons can establish themselves at the top in light of these changes in Shadowkeep.
What we know from PAX West: Recently, many new pieces of information regarding the major autumn expansion Shadowkeep have circulated due to the convention:
- Leak shows new raid weapons with exceptional designs
- We now know what changes are coming to PvP in Destiny 2: especially Hunters are looking forward to it
- With this new Warlock exotic, you will look like hardcore alcoholics in Destiny 2
- New raid gear is known – but it’s not really that new
- 3 new exotics from Destiny 2: Shadowkeep spotted at the convention – this is what they can do
What do you think of this change? Let us know in the comments.
