The new co-op shooter Outriders is set to launch at the end of the year. The developers aim to break a trend – the shooter is intended to be complete from the start.
This is Outriders: Outriders comes from the makers of Bulletstorm, “People Can Fly” and Square Enix, combining fantasy with science fiction. The co-op shooter sends you together against a variety of aliens and monsters and is also set to be released at the end of the year for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
During the week, there was a thundering trailer and some new information about the game. Players drew comparisons to other games – such as Anthem and Destiny 2. However, at least in one regard, Outriders aims to distinguish itself from the competition.
This is what Outriders wants to do differently: In an interview with the portal “VG247“, Szymon Barchan, Narrative Designer for Outriders, stated that they will break a trend in a certain way. Instead of opting for a games-as-a-service model like other loot shooters, Outriders is set to provide “the full package” from the start.
They came up with this plan four years ago and intend to stick to it: “We deliver a complete package with a complete game, a complete story,” said Barchan. Level designer Rafal Pawlowski explained that players should not have to wait for content for their money: “Games are really expensive, and we want players to have everything at launch for the price.”
Thus, Outriders will likely refrain from extensive roadmaps. However, they want to make the game a big IP, which is why they are considering expanding the world of Outriders: “A large universe that we will expand at some point. Right now, we are focused on delivering what we have announced.”
It therefore does not seem entirely impossible that Outriders will later receive additional content. However, the creators have remained silent about content such as raids or additional dungeons.
A possible comparison could be made to Borderlands 3. Gearbox also stated that the loot shooter is not a classic game-as-a-service. However, the game has been continuously updated since its release and expanded with time-limited events. Additionally, there are four DLCs for Borderlands 3 that are set to be released by the end of 2020. It is possible that Outriders will take a similar route.
In any case, Outriders could become one of the most exciting co-op games of this year:
