Yesterday, on October 20, Nintendo announced the new console Nintendo Switch with a trailer. As more and more MMORPGs are appearing on current consoles, the question arises whether Switch will also be supplied with online role-playing games.
According to Nintendo, Switch is primarily a stationary console that is regularly connected to a television. Through the controller, one plays Nintendo and third-party games as usual. However, one can remove a kind of tablet from the console. To this, one attaches two parts of the controller and thus gets a handheld, with which one can continue playing on the go. The two controllers can also be removed from the handheld part to play multiplayer games with friends, for example. It’s an innovative idea that can certainly provide a lot of fun.
Will Nintendo Switch also offer MMORPGs?
In the announcement trailer of the console, alongside Nintendo games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and a new Super Mario game, games from other developers can also be seen. Among them is The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. This essentially confirms that Switch will also be broader in terms of games, like the Wii U, and will focus not only on Nintendo-owned games but also on core games. But what about MMORPGs?
The potential and the hardware would certainly be available. That one can play an MMORPG well with a controller is shown, for example, by Neverwinter or The Elder Scrolls Online for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The Nvidia Tegra chip used in Nintendo’s Switch is said by Nvidia to have enough power to display modern games smoothly. So that’s not the problem. The console will also have an internet connection, which will make online games possible. For example, the shooter Splatoon was shown, which can also be played online.
Playing MMORPGs on the go – a dream!
It would therefore be quite possible to play MMORPGs on Nintendo’s Switch. With the option to use the console as a handheld on the go, many new options would arise. One could simply continue playing their MMORPG on the bus or train. Many MMO fans would certainly welcome such an opportunity. For example, to make boring lectures at university more interesting with a round of MMO.
However, Nintendo has not announced anything in this regard yet. However, it would be a fantastic opportunity for Nintendo to enter the MMO sector and deliver an interesting innovation right away. Whether that will happen is still up in the air.
